inspiring!

A must for all those visiting Safed. Beautiful ancient synagogue preserved with great authenticity. Brings you back 400 years to the days when the great Kabbalists walked the streets of the Holy city of Safed.

Closed most of the time, but worth visiting

I got lucky and finally found the synagogue open and a tour group in there getting a lecture about Rav Yosef Karo. I entered on my own and looked around and found glass enclosed cabinets in which were ancient texts and manuscripts that I must assume belong to Rav Karo or his contemporaries. It is a beautiful synagogue, designed kabbalistically, as are most of the synagogues in the Old City of Safed. You don't need more than about 15 minutes to explore the synagogue though.

Lovely synagogue

This is a beautiful synagogue, but there wasn't any information about the various symbols and artifacts in the synagogue, which I would have liked. There was a tour going on in the synagogue when I came---I had passed by multiple times on multiple visits and the place was always closed--so I just looked around and took some pictures and left.

Small Synagogue With a Presence.

This synagogue makes you feel that you are in an important place. There is a book collection of books that look they might be hundreds of years old. I could only fantasize as to what gems would be in those books.

Living History

This synagogue is extremely near to my heart as my family have been the caretakers for generations. We were expelled from Spain with the rest of the Sephardis in 1492 and Israel has been a home to us ever since. Despite having been destroyed in not one but TWO separate earthquakes, one in 1759 and one in 1837, this sacred place is still standing. I would encourage anyone who is in Safed to visit this beautiful gem and take the opportunity to learn more about Rabbi Caro, his teachings and his influence in the Sephardi community.

Awe-inspiring house of prayer

In addition to a peaceful solemn place to pray and meditate, there is a centuries-old library of original manuscripts.

Its amazing to think that the great Rabbi Yosef Caro sat in this shul and wrote the Shulchan Arukh. The views are spectacular and the space is quiet and intimate. Very restful and spiritual

Old but still active synagogue
May 2018 • Friends
This is one of several old and active synagogues in Sefad. Very small but an interesting place. Lots of books and some damaged Torahs on display.

Tiny synogogue
Mar 2018 • Friends
You can easily walk by this tiny synagogue. But I recommend stopping in. A lady sits at the desk selling religious items. They accept donations for looking. Not required to donate.
