We climbed to St. Anthony's cave and toured the monastery. The rest is hard to describe. Go. I'll be back if I get the chance.

In the middle of the desert, not far from the beauty of the Red Sea, is this place built for peace and quiet, but is buzzing with pilgrims. It was amazing to think about the men who spend their entire adult lives there.

Having reached the monastery 4 hours later at around 9 am the true sense of peace and light shone from the mountains. There are around 1380 steps leading to... More

He told us about the history of the monastry and showed us around. The old church was amazing the wall paintings beautiful. It was so quiet... More

I visited St Anthony's Monastery in March 2010 during my stay at Hurghada. We arrived just before sunrise and attended the morning mass at about 5.30am. The monastery is set against the desert hills in a spectacular setting. You can spend several hours or more at the monastery as there is so much to see - magnificent ancient wall paintings,... More
