Guatape is a must when visiting Medellin. We used LandVenture, which was fantastic (reviewed elsewhere). The reason to go is the Pierre Del Penol, which is a huge granite rock that rises from the earth out of nowhere and looks like that thing in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. There is a safe concrete stairway (750 or so steps)... More

This is a day trip for you and the family. You see the beautiful natural landscape of the country-side, climb a massive landmark rock, shop at local arts and crafts dealers, eat excellent food, and simply enjoy a nice day. Great trip for children as well. Plenty of energy to burn after an hour car ride.

From Medellin, visiting the laguna of Guatape makes for a lovely day trip. The laguna is in fact an artificial lake meandering around multiple islands from the former mountains' top. It was flooded in the late 1960s to create an hydro-electric dam. Once in Guatape, there are three main attractions not to be missed: a) The laguna itself (boat tour)... More

It is a view I would recommend. One can see the beauty of this land from up top and it's breathtaking. Would suggest to go during the week as it is very touristy. (So is Guatape) Many stalls/vendors selling souvenirs and anything else you want to spend money on. There is a huge parking lot for cars and tour buses... More

This artificial lake with the existing islands is an amazing sight to behold after climbing the rock of about 700 stairs. It is totally worth the effort to make the climb as the view is simply wonderful.

Really great views of the lake from the top of the big rock. We got a boat ride too. Some lovely houses on the edges of the laguna. Beautiful and picturesque. Definitely worth the trip from medellin.

We made our own way here via the public bus from terminal norte which was easy and cheap (12,000 each I think). We gave the rock a miss because it was really crowded and touristy and I thought the 15,000 entry fee was too much (and I was being lazy). There were more Colombians than foreign tourists and lots of... More

This is a nice escape from Medellín but keep in mind it's one of the biggest tourist attractions in the area. So, lots of people, noise, things for sale all over. It's not the relaxing, scenic, rural escape you might imagine until you get OUT of the Peñol area. I recommend doing the "must-do's" (the rock + the town) and... More

We heard so many good stories about guatape! We didn't take a organized tour. It is very easy on your own. Go to terminal north in Medellin and take a local bus. It's cheaper as well. Arriving by bus and seeing the rock was amazing. You pay a little to enter the rock and then have to climb around 700... More

It's a natural landmark very close to Medellin. A very beautiful place that offers some things to visitors like water sports, food, recreative parks and things to do. There's a good hotel offer also and farms that any person can rent for a weekend for example.
