Scenic and historic
Dec 2019
A must-see attraction in Shaoxing in my opinion. This place is packed with history of Chinese caligraphy, which is the centerpiece of traditional Chinese culture. It is composed of two main parts - the outdoor tour with all the Chinese pavillions and gardens and the museum. I would recommend at least 2 to 3 hours if not half a day for a good look around.

A great place to experience calligraphy - even better in some specific time
Feb 2019 • Family
#Before the trip
It is acceptable to visit there just for the nature scenery, but you will lost the essence of this site. The Orchid Pavilion is famous for its historical meaning in calligraphy, so I highly recommend you to make some preparations about calligraphy. Searching Wikipedia for famous calligraphers such as Wang Xizhi will make this trip better. You could also click the link in the review for more information.

#During the trip
It is a cultural site, so the visiting time is vital. Personally I recommend you to visit in these time:

The Spring Festival. In the first day of the first month in lunar calendar every year, some local artist gather there and hold a ceremony to salute to Wang Xizhi, the sage of calligraphy. They write some calligraphy works to the tourists, so it's the best chance to experience the calligraphy culture closely.

The Tomb Sweeping Day. Some activities about traditional will be held on this day. The most famous one is to put a bowl on the water. Whomever the bowl stopped in the front of is asked to drink the wine in the bowl and write a poem.

In summer. There are lots of trees and it's a good place to hide from the heat wave.

#Facilities: there is guiding service at the entrance. Wheelchairs are available too.

Hope you have a pleasant trip! I visited there recently and it's awesome.

Culturally Rich Grounds

While most Westerners have never heard of the Orchid Pavilion, this is a significant location for Chinese culture. Famous poets and artists have come here and created significant pieces of work here. Even if you aren’t familiar with Chinese poetry, the architecture is still fascinating with beautiful buildings and scenery. As you are exiting the grounds, don’t forget to stop by some of the shops selling beautiful carvings and works of calligraphy.

Beautiful site with deep cultural heritage

It is a must go place if you are interested in Chinese art history, especially cartography. In addition one can see how ancient Chinese scholars combing drinking, writing poems and cartography. Glasses with wine was flowing down alone the channel and scholars siting along the channel must pick it up to drink. If missed one would have to write a poem.
On green hills with a river behind, there are pavilions, lakes, cartographic exhibits but no orchids. At far end one can find a segment of preserved old trail along the river. I went there early, enjoyed a quiet, relax walk with fresh air before tourist groups coming.
The site can be reached by taking the tourist bus no. 3 from the downtown Shaoxing for three Chines yuan, but the stop for return is not obvious, or by cab for about 30 yuan. Chinese speaking is necessary.

holy land of calligraphy

This is a place devoted to the famous Wang Xizhi, revered as the sage of calligraphy. Admission price as at the date of this review is 80 yuan, which I felt was quite steep for something which my hotel assured me would be completed in an hour. But in the end I felt it was worth it, as apart from the scenic / historic spots there are two museums, one quite modern and well curated.

Former Artist's Retreat
Oct 2015 • Couples
Orchid Pavilion isn't a name that will be familiar to most Western travelers, but it is quite well known to Chinese people, who remember this place for its associations with former great poets and artists of a bygone era.

Today, there are few pavilions and ancient inscriptions to see. One of the pavilions, the Imperial Stele Pavilion, is a magnificent structure with beautiful woodwork and rich stone carving. There are also some 300 year old houses and ancient ponds to sit by and enjoy the views. The mountains in the distance make it even more pleasant, though the road noise detracts slightly from the serenity. Entrance is 40 yuan.

One of the best spot in ShaoXing, like many other have written, it's about a famous official and poet, Wang Xi Zhi. It brings you back in time to experience the culture. And it is a Must visit of Shaoxing. Also, when you are in Shao Xing, give their Nv Er Hong or Er Guo Tou a try. It's their local wine.

One of the highlights of my trip to China
Dec 2012 • Friends
If you are interested in or study brush calligraphy, in coming here you will witness where Wang Xizhi wrote his legendary Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Anthology, considered the masterpiece of ancient Chinese calligraphy.

Though the park has felt the effects of the Cultural Revolution, your imagination can take you to the 4th century night the Preface was written; you can walk next to a meandering brook that replicates the one Wang Xizhi and other sages sat by. In this park, as a tourist you can move away from the bustle of the city and just slow down.

Again, if you are interested in brush calligraphy there are many, many vendors whom you will pass as you leave the park who sell souvenirs related to Wang Xizhi . Books, calligraphy weights, and various copies of the Preface.

This is not a tourist visit for everyone, but I will long remember and feel fortunate for the afternoon I spent in this beautiful site of ancient Chinese calligraphy.

It is considered one of the most popular tourist spots in Shaoxing, an ancient city in Zhejiang China. A famous Chinese calligrapher by the name of Wang Xi Zhi is one of the attendees in this Orchid Pavilion where he meet up with over 20 calligraphers and poets wherein they finished up goblets of wine whilst writing poems.
