I don't know much about Chinese history but the historic palace had me so impressed. With relics such as the past emperors, empresses, royal concubines' attires, home furniture, household items and the weapons used by the Qing armies left me with a deep memory. They gave me an insight into their lifestyles centuries ago. For such fantastic displays, I could... More

There is a charm in walking around an old palace imagining the ancient emperors living there and going about their duties and lives. Whilst not very large, it still takes a while to take in all the many rooms, courtyards and buildings. Very accessible as you can simply walk around and explore.

Cheap entrance ticket, it was bundle in my package tour. Just visit and walk round, nothing much to see actually, many rooms open for viewing, display not as grand as the Beijing one. Guided tour available if u r on your own

We went to the forbidden city in Beijing last year and it was very impressive but it felt large and cold. We found that many of the rooms could not be entered, you had to queue to look through a gated entryway into mysterious dark things inside. It is too big to see it all and you leave wondering what... This is an amazing cultural gem in Shenyang. It has wonderful displays of silk paintings and articles from an earlier time. That said, there has been no comprehensive attempt to make this the manifestly magnificent palace it truly is. Compared with similar Japanese sites, the Shenyang Imperial Palace is deteriorating and neglected. Beautiful woodwork has been left to the elements.... More

Spent a very happy 2 to 3 hours here and found it more manageable than the more famous Beijing version which I don't have great memories of visiting. Fewer people and smaller scale probably help keep more of an atmosphere.

This is a smaller (and older) version of the Forbidden City in Beijing. It's interesting and informative to look around but you will only need a few hours to see the whole thing. The buildings are beautiful and well preserved. It's very popular with tourists so be prepared for it to be busy in places. An English guidebook or audio... More

I visited the Forbidden City in Beijing many times many years ago. The Shenyang Imperial Palace surpasses my memories of the Forbidden City in Beijing. This was the imperial palace when the Qing dynasty was established and remained there for about the first 12 years before the Qing court moved the capital to Beijing. Very impressive and well maintained. It's... More
