Originally the home of the wealthy Délano family in the early 20th century,...

Originally the home of the wealthy Délano family in the early 20th century, this impressive building was acquired by the local Municipal Authorities in 1985, and converted into a museum. Focus in two principal collections is a natural history department dedicated to Chile's native fauna and flora; and an archaeological department offering a permanent display related to the indigenous peoples of Northern Chile, the Aconcagua region and the Mapuche in the south of the country. The museum also houses one of the most important collections in the world related to Easter Island, including the only genuine Moai statue in the whole of continental Chile, outside in the museum garden. Guided tours are available in both Spanish and English.

This museum offers interesting and detailed information about several native groups. If you read Spanish, you can get quite a lot of information; if you read English you get a good amount. One exhibit is of the mummified remains of a young woman including the items she was buried with a few thousand years ago.

The relics from Easter Island occupy about half the ground floor. There are explanations in both Spanish and English. Also on the ground floor are items related to early inhabitants of Chile. You can take photos but without flash. The second floor is given over to taxidermy: not really my thing, but the exhibits were well prepared and displayed.

We found this museum fascinating, with the exhibits explained wonderfully to us by the lovely Patricia. I'd recommend asking for a guide as the stories are so interesting.

We found this museum on Wikipedia. Sounded interesting so we went. It was worth the trip to be sure. Upon arrival we were greated by the longserving English speaking guide who offerred a free tour. She had been mentioned in the Wikipedia article. We took the tour. Excellent. We learned so much about Easter Island. Saw many, many artifacts. Really... More

I had a great English language tour of this small but impressive museum. If you didn't know anything about the inhabitants of Easter Island before you will after visiting this place

I am so glad that the tourist information office in Vina Del Mar recommended this museum which covers the native peoples of Chile from the south to the north, including Easter Island. Going to this museum is probably the best way to experience the island without actually going there. One of the museum staff also gave me a guided tour... More

Loved to be able to learn about Easter Island since we weren´t able to go there. The guide gave us a decent tour, and since we got there late, she even took the time to tell us what we had missed.

Is a good place to visit. It is not a big museum with a large collection but it is interest. It's right next to a palace that you can see from outside and from a few steps Of a gothical cathedral. Es un buen lugar para visitar. No tiene una colección muy grande pero es interesante. Está justo a lado... More
