If you enjoy seeing a non profit project that is successful bringing the English language to the less than modern world, this is it. Big Brother Mouse publishes books in Lao and English for a population that has no access to books in their own language or English. Reading and English is the key to the the development of the... We have been in Laos for two weeks, not talking to a lot of locals. We visited this place at the end of our stay, but we should have visited in the beginning instead, as it was an unique opportunity to talk to local youth, getting some insight about their lived, opinions and background, which provided us with new eyes... My wife and I came across this project by sheer accident, which means that it should have a lot more publicity than it hitherto has, because it is such a great concept! Basically, between the hours 9am – 11am and 5pm – 7pm you can turn up, sit down and chat with locals who wish to learn or improve their... More

We spent 2 hours here.My student had excellent English and could hold a conversation quite easily. He told me about his musical talents and guitar playing.Later two other students arrived Their English could be improved and it was a pleasure showing them pictures on my iPad and asking them to describe what they could see.The first student had left by then... We were not able to visit when there were activities going on, but the bookstore was great to browse through, and we bought some books to distribute in the small villages we were heading to after Luang Prabang.

Outside Luang Prabang BBM has built a school which teaches local kids and teens. You can take a tour there from their office in Luang Prabang and converse in English with these kids. It is a noble way to give something back to the community. You can also donate money for their publishing and educational activities. If you have only... More

If you have two spare hours, please spend it here from 9-11 or 5-7. Speaking English to eager locals wanting to practise their English will be a rewarding experience and you will learn a lot about the local people. This is a wonderful way to give back to the community you are visiting and these young adults will be very... More

Big Brother Mouse is doing great work boosting literacy and children's accessibility to books. You can visit in morning and afternoon to support a teacher with English language lessons, sponsor a book party in a community or just visit and buy the books that have been written, illustrated and published by the project. Amid all the travellers decadence shopping and... More

What a great idea! This activity was a highlight of Luang Prabang for me. It was a very authentic way to interact with the locals and they are all very keen to chat and improve their English. If you have a spare two hours, definitely go and have a chat!

For two hours twice a day, every day, for the price of simply speaking in English, I get to hear about the lives, interests and goals of locals ranging from young children to university students, both laypeople and novice monks. If you are looking for a more authentic experience beyond visiting the major sites in the area, eating at the... More
