    Beautiful
Wear good walking shoes as the old cobbled streets are sometimes difficult to walk on. The Old Town is lovely to stroll around and take in the sights. Beautiful old buildings, little cafe areas and the Roman Theatre are must sees on a visit to Plovdiv.

    Little Gem
Spread over three hills Plovdiv claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe. Unfortunately the oldest archeological site was closed. The Roman Theatre is spectacular and worth visiting Plovdiv for this alone. The 18th / 19th century houses are interesting. And then have a great meal with a decent Bulgarian red in Pavaj restaurant in Kampana district

    Wander and enjoy
A fascinating and compact area with many quant and interesting buildings. It was a joy just to wander around and admire. The streets are cobbled and uneven so good shoes are needed to avoid twisting an ankle!

    Charming Bulgarian-Ottoman Alsace
The old town of Plovdiv is really charming, couloured timber-framed merchant houses in Bulgarian-Ottoman style are really nice to see and carry much of history in them (just like coloured timber-framed houses in Colmar, Alsace), they were mainly built in the 19th century and now mainly turned into hotels, restaurants or head locations of some local institutions. They are situated around the hill, old city walls and ancient theatre, so it is a very nice and pleasant walk all around the old town, a paradise for all history buffs and artists. Shoping streets and Roman stadium are not far away.

A good way to spend a couple of hours wandering the old cobbled streets exploring churches, old houses (which a few are available to view for a small fee), the odd museum and of course the highlight the roman amphitheater which is in great condition and is still used today for concerts. Good walking shoes are recommended due to the cobbled streets

The old town is a bit hilly, so I recommend wearing appropriate footwear and being prepared for that. You can find parking in the Kapana area

Had quite some days in Sofia and so I wanted to have an excursion to another city. I didn't join any local tour but took the bus at the Cental Bus Station in Sofia on my own. 8:10am departed from Sofia, 4:10pm departed from Plovdiv. Each way 2 hours. So I had plenty of time in Plovdiv.

It's not easy to walk in the Old Town with the uneven cobblestone streets. It's uneasy for me to find the ancient theatre which is the main attraction for me to come to Plovdiv.

Overall the town is not too attractive and interesting for me.

Possibly better than Sofia because it's easy to get around with a much more condensed old city center although there are some hills just on the edge of the city
