It dates from a time when Ottoman soldiers were growing increasingly tired of Serb rebellions against their rule. After quelling one such uprising in 1809, Ottoman troops decapitated 952 fallen Serbs and built the short, square tower out of the Serbs' heads. While the Ottomans intended it to serve as a warning to the local population, within a few years the Serbs had managed to rid their lands of the Ottoman occupiers, and they preserved the Skull Tower as a memorial to the sacrifice of the early Serb nationalists.

If you are not from the Balkans, Cele Kula is one unique cruel chapter of the history of this beautiful region which was under oppression of the Ottoman empire for several centuries...I hope history don't ever repeat in tht way

This unique monument in the world was created as a consequence of the major battles of Čegar. Skull Tower is a monument from the First Serbian Uprising, which was in retaliation by the Turkish government in Serbia built from the skulls of dead Serbian soldiers, led by Stevan Sindjelic, in the battle of Čegar. Located at 4 km from the... More

Not much to see in the building. Entrance is really cheap though. Worth to see if you have never seen skulls before.

Small church with a church inside made of skulls, very impressive but small. Most of the information signs are in English.

This creepy church is probably one of the more known Niš sights. Great guideness and explanation is also available. Worth seeing.

The tower was a symbol of Serbian rebels against the Ottomans. It was worth paying a visit, espacially as the place is easily accessible via car and the visit will not take you more than 15 minutes.

If you ever pass through Nish, the skull tower is worth a visit. The place itself is small and half an hour should be enough to have a look and read through the history, but it is of monumental importance and once you lay eyes it will leave you unable to move and deep in contemplation .The tower is made... Definitely worth a quick visit. These are the heads of failed Serbian revolutionaries the Ottomans made a tower out of as a warning to future insurrections. There's a quote from the French poet Lamartine that was quite moving. Creepy.

There has been a tower full of skulls of fallen Serbian warriors from Serbian uprising against the Turks. It is very important piece of Serbian history. But most of the Skulls has fallen out and it is closed in a building for protection, so it is not so impresionate as it could be.
