Visited the old fortified city of Dubrovnik on 16 Nov. Once after entering the city via Pile Gate which is the main entrance, one will see Onophrian Fountain which is prominently-located. It was built in 1438-44 by Onofrio who was an architect. He was also in charged of the water supply system then. Water was drawn from River Dubrovacka. We... More

Situated just inside the walls, near the Pile Gate, this famous landmark was built in the 15th century. It was damaged in the 1667 earthquake but is still noteworthy

You will see this as long as you walk the main street in old town.. Good photo op, but thats about it, surrounded by tourists constantly and not much other than a fountain. Beautiful though.

Built from 1438 to 1440, the Big Onofrio's Fountain is a sixteen-sided container with a cupola, and was one of the ending points of the aqueduct system. Each of the sixteen sides has a unique "maskeron" design (stone-carved masked face) with the faucet projecting out of the mouth of the each design.

As you go in through Pile Gate, you will come across this ancient fountain. The main street starts after the fountain, you cannot miss it. Very interesting, and you can still drink water from it.

There isn't an awful lot to this historic landmark which greets you after having come down through the Pile Gate. It is picturesque and is a good meeting point, but its most useful purpose is that you can safely top up your bottles from the fountain taps!

This fountain was the original source of water for the residents of the Old Town. It still delivers water but not from the original source.

Interesting ancient fountain and the end of the aqueduct built to supply the city with water a few hundred years ago, and still operating today.
