Loved it. If you appreciate ancient ruins.

This was amazing. A lot of people don't bother but if you appreciate ancient ruins, this is a must. I really enjoyed this. Like stepping back in time.

Walking through history...
May 2021 • Friends
Definitely the coolest spot to access/enter the old city. The gate is sorta "falling apart", as it has not been retouched in years, yet, giving it the charm it has!

This gate is a great entrance near one of my favorite bars and my favorite coffee. It’s a beautiful entrance to the amazing stone city.

My favorite entrance!
Sep 2019
The Eastern Gate, is one of several entrances to the old town of Split. Out of all the entrances this gate was my favorite based on appearance, it really felt Romanesque! This gate is especially beautiful at night with the lights. The only negative I have with this gate is how close the merchants and their booths are, kind of an eye sore. If you are spending any amount of time in Split, you will most likely see this gate, enjoy!

One of many Entrances

As Split is covered in history and very good condition of these buildings and historical you are spoilt but this doesn't look much and would do you home work prior to attending and these special historical areas as there are loads.

Porta Orientalis Silver Gate Split
Sep 2019
The historic Silver Gate of Split used to enter Diocletian's palace from the east. This gate is not as well preserved as the others.

Porta orientalis is the Roman name.

One of the entrances

One of the entrances and ancient gates of Diocletian's Palace. The Roman arches are nice to see. A part of the monument.

Roman Gate Closest to Food Market
Sep 2019
The Silver Gate aka: Eastern Gate, seems to be a simpler copy of the Golden Gate in Diocletian's Palace. Not to be confused with the main or Golden Gate that has two towers and many more decorations. This gate is near the Church of St Dominic and the Food Market which is just outside the walls on the corner of Riva and Hrvoieva streets.

Nothing special
Sep 2018
There are several gates to Split. I was underwhelmed with this one because it wasn't all that architecturally interesting and the view of it was marred by commercial activities on both sides. I didn't see TA pages for review of other gates, though they may be there. If you take time to walk to the harbor you can enter or exit by this gate and draw your own conclusions. If pressed for time, give it a miss.

The Silver Gate
May 2019
If you have come to the palace from the water front, you have probably entered either through the south or east gate. The south gate is the most direct route from the harbor, while getting to the east gate requires walking along the market that is right outside of the palace’s east wall.

The East Gate (Silver Gate) is one of four gates (north, south, east and west) into the palace. Restored in 1952, the East (Silver) Gate is considered to be more modest than the North (Golden) Gate; however, the history of the Silver Gate was enriched in 2000, when Pope John Paul II passed through it on his way to St Domnius Cathedral where he later prayed.

Regardless of which gate you initially enter, and during your visit to the palace you definitely want to see the south, east and north gates. You can easily locate any of the gates by going to the palace peristyle (center square), face north, south, east or west and continue walking in that direction until you arrive at the gate.
