    Beautiful Historic Town
I also shared a selection of Places To Visit Near Split in Croatia on my blog called 'the Frenchie Mummy' and you can find more family-friendly reviews on my Instagram @thefrenchiemummy. Feel free to Google it as I can't share links here 😉 Beautiful city with a lot of history and so much to see! I recommend getting a guide so that you can really learn about the town in detail. And it's more than a location of Game of Thrones!

Great picturesque old town on the harbour.
This was an excellent little old town mixed in with being so close to a beautiful harbor. It was great on a sunny day. You only need a day to see all of it but it was very nice to see. It has the classic small streets, historical monuments and buildings and lovely little squares. A lot to see around every corner.

    Amazing piece of history
I'm glad that we visited Split in the winter. We had heard story after story about the crowds of tourists in the summer months, but I can honestly say that in winter it was fantastic. There were enough people around so that we didn't feel like we were in a ghost town, but yet we felt like we almost had the place to ourselves. Most stores, restaurants, and museums were open in the winter too. Old Split is mostly within the walls of Diocletian's Palace. We spent 2 full days just walking around this area, trying to see every part of it. It's not a very organized old town, in the sense that you can tell that it has had pieces built and rebuilt over the course of 2000 years. Today there are stores, restaurants, apartments, hotels, museums, churches, etc throughout the whole place. Some streets are wide and some are so small that 2 people can barely walk through at the same time. There were several ancient palaces, large squares, an old clock tower, military defense towers, and more. There were parts that were in ruins, and other parts that have been well maintained and/or reconstructed over time. I love history, and walking through these old streets really gives you a sense of what it may have been like living there in the past. I highly recommend visiting, and taking the time to walk down each street. Walk in and out of each gate to the complex too - they're all different. We were told that in the summer, its elbow to elbow with people there. So I'd recommend visiting in the off season if you really want the chance to be able to take it all in.

Old split the area to stay
Old split or old town is certainly the area to stay while in Split, amazing historical building and laneways packed with history. I would highly recommend taking a walking tour so they can point out and explain the building and history of old Split. Lots of restaurants and bars to also enjoy, however when I was there in February not all restaurants opens for trade yet.

Beautiful! So different from the rest of Croatia
What really stands out is the architecture of the old Split area. Appears very Roman with narrow, cobbled lanes. And majority of the buildings are painted in this greyish white hue. The market has numerous shops including the big brands. Incidentally, the cottage we are staying in is over 100 years old!

    Fantastic wonderful Diocletian's Palace!
Old Split is the old town of the city and it is located, where there is Diocletian's Palace, which is an old Roman Palace, and surroundings. It is a fantastic place full of very beautiful streets with bars, restaurants and shops. Also, most of the streets are from old Diocletian's Palace, where the perystile is nowadays an amazing square, you can see some ruins of the palace, the gates of the palace are gates to enter to the old town, the temples (like Jupiter one) are little chapels or churches, the Roman decumanus is one of the main streets, the catacombs of the palace are underground zone with an archeological museum and a market. Really amazing zone! Also, you can see some buildings built in Middle Ages, which are very well integrated with the Roman old part like the Cathedral, where you can go up to the bell tower and see wonderful views of the old town and surroundings, or some palaces. Very curious old town! Top in the country and in the world!

Great place, great history, nice people
Before we travel anywhere we are researching what we would like to see and the list is usually long and we never accomplish our goal to visit all places. So we usually take the list with us and just walking the street and see a few places. This is what we did also during our holiday in Croatia - Split and other towns. We found Split full of beautiful buildings and architecture, with amazing history, when you look carefully there are so many beautiful details around the old town. Don't concentrate only on Diocletian's Palace which was overcrowded during our visit. We wanted to visit the cathedral which is the second oldest Catholic cathedral in the world but didn't manage it. The town has plenty good restaurants - Konoba and we visited a few but we tend to go away from the centre as usually these are overpriced and we are looking for local cuisine. If you want relax and a bit of quiet don't choose accommodation in the centre (which is vibrant and loud) but a bit further. We did walk from our accommodation about 20 minutes to the centre and we felt very safe. Unfortunately I got cold from air condition which we used as the heat was unbelievable, especially in the night we were not able to proper sleep. So we will definitely come again sometime in the future.

    Easy walking tour
This is a must when visiting Split. A movie was being filmed so we had limited access to all of the sites in the old city. But it is reminiscent of Venice, Italy. There are just a few wide open spaces with many small alleys that allow you to stroll and get lost in the old city. It was not too crowded in April. I imagine in the hotter months it must be very crowded.

    Beautiful
Split is beautiful. The old town is great and the harbour is fantastic. Numerous restaurants and cafes on the harbour but there are gems of restaurants behind the promenade and in the old town. I stayed 3 nights but I think 2 nights would have been enough.

Split is a very beautiful place full of bars and restaurants with a great variety of food and drinks. If you like history it’s fantastic but have to say for me one for four days max. Weather was amazing all the week. We used yellow taxis all but 1 trip and it was usually 11 euros from hotel to green market and same on the way back. Except the last time we used the taxi rank at the harbour and it was 34.34 euros, an absolute ripoff. Beware. ( that’s 2 kilometres). Otherwise happy with everything else.

The old town lies partially within and partially outside the old palace and is understandably very popular with tourists. Quite a lot of the palace's structure remains, although it is not clear how much has ben restored. The old town substantially exists within the palace's walls. Very impressive

This is not a review of Split - which I found to be a wonderful place to visit. It is a warning about holiday money.
In Split, many businesses want to be paid in cash and prices can be cheaper if you pay cash. The bus station, left luggage offices, boat tours only take cash. The problem is the ATMs charge around €5.50 to make a cash withdrawal. My advice is change your money into euros in UK and bring plenty of cash with you. Otherwise you risk paying extortionate exchange fees and higher prices.
I should like to know if this applies everywhere in Croatia ?

Avoid. Not a reliable tour provider. Schedule tour of old city for our family. Even confirmed the week before and Maja was a no show. We tried to contact her several times and waited a the designated meeting spot for some time. She finally responded that "she forgot" about our tour. We wasted our afternoon waiting and could not find another tour in such short notice.
