We booked a bike and hike trip into Lake Matka from Skopja with Bojan from Tours from Local Guides and it was fantastic if you like biking and hiking! The book ride was fun as we saw neighborhoods and countryside of Skopje and then the...More

I found Matka Canyon very wide (and therefore less picturesque than other canyons). I hiked along the side of the river/lake for a while but found that in some places the paths are destroyed by falling stones, to the extent that it was unsafe to...More

A gorgeous place with hiking trails that provide amazing views of the canyon. I'd recommend taking the boat ride to the cave just to be on the water as well as trekking around it.

We came to this place as recommended by a local. Not too far from the city. We rented a taxi & asked the driver to wait for us for an hour for about 1300 denar. It was a nice visit.

The lake and area itself is really nice. We took the (crowded) bus to get there, and walked to the hotel/restaurant. We had a pretty good lunch there, pricy for Macedonia but still affordable. After that we decided to walk on the path that starts...More

The canyon is easy to access by public transport but would recommend arranging a taxi to take you back as this place gets super crowded. There were so many people that it spoiled the experience. I can't imagine what it would be like in summer....More

Interesting cobblestone walking path along the rocks. Possibility to enjoy a boat tour or a kayak outing without reservation (at least in May). Life jackets are provided for those two activities. Do not miss the cave, one of the deepest in Europe! (Accessible via boat...More

You can arrive by local bus or book a tour. The best way to see the canyon is by boat. They take you to a cave inhabited by bats and the scenery on the way is simply breathtaking. I found the cafe at the boat...More

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
I have a general question about Macedonia, particularly Skopje: does anyone know of any volunteer work that I could do for about a week in area? Am social worker, age 58, traveling with 20 year old college student - want to give our time to worthwhile cause. Thoughts?

Hello people, I am planning to visit Matka Canyon with public transport. If anyone remembers, you could you please tell me where did you catch the bus from (central Skopje) and where did you get off, since I've read there are north and south sides, 3-4km apart from each other which are very different. Also,in terms of visiting monasteries, how far are they from each other? Is it easy to find/get around? Thank you!! Kamile

Bus driving 45-50 minutes to the last stop. Then it is necessary to walk to the lake. For the schedule is best to ask the cashier or look at the timetable (maybe if you type it on the Internet).
