Monkey Island Tour from Panama City

171 reviews
Monkey Island lies on Gatun Lake, along the Panama Canal, and is renowned for its large population of monkeys, along with other wildlife. On this tour, set sail on a scenic riverboat cruise around the lake and the Chagres River; look out for wildlife such as slothes, iguanas, and crocodiles; and spot four different types of monkey on the island—mantled howler, white-faced capuchin, Geoffroy’s tamarin, and lemurine owl monkeys.

Went there today 21st of December with a public bus. Even checked their website before for opening times. A security guard at the gate then told me that it’s closed and I need to be in the same bus on the way out. Covid restrictions are ok but you guys should inform visitors about this! If the website is not reliable what then?

This was great! We went as the pandemic was just beginning so a lot of the activities and booths that would have been open were not opened. In particular they had a set up to take a professional picture and I guess do key chains or photo frames but no one was there. But we enjoyed it nonetheless and were grateful we got to experience just before the world shut down.

Arriving just in time for the IMAX film at about 11 am, I would just describe it as "informative & entertaining" (narrated by Morgan Freeman & portraying really the "complete timeline" of the Canal from the surveying missions initiated by the Spanish king in the early 1500's to the attempt at building the Canal by the French in the late 1800's to the eventual completion by the Americans in the early 1900's, so yes plenty of "fascinating facts" to learn and yet not a boring movie with some nature scenes & such which the way I saw were just especially suitable to view "in IMAX 3-D"!). Then after the movie was walking over to another building (but pretty much just an adjacent one to the theater building) with a 4-storied museum which despite its floors just being modest-sized ones is "quite packed" with displays (photos, big info signs & miniature ship models) for the Canal's construction phase on its 1st floor all the way to its current day's operations on the 3rd & 4th floors (with my favorite part being the "simulation room" for operating a ship through the Canal) and where unrelated to the Canal but there are also some "fish of Panama" to see in some sizeable aquariums in the wall on one side of the 2nd floor. And finally after the museum was heading up one more floor and out onto the viewing deck on the "topmost 5th level" where although not a particularly busy day was a worthwhile time for about an hour & a half from 2 30 to 4 pm to see two cruise ships arrive and one of which depart as well (actually 3 in total with also like a container ship in the Cocoli Locks for "larger vessels" on the far side), and yes it was kind of a "2-way view" for me over the two consecutive days since I had passed through this set of locks (with its "2 chambers" to go through) just the day before on the tour boat Pacific Queen and had watched this building (with its viewing decks packed with spectators) from the front deck of my tour boat and now a day later became one of the spectators myself (also a packed viewing deck on this day where the empty deck became crowded in just no time as the first ship arrived). Just about a 15-minute ride from the "old town" Casco Viejo, it was just about 5 dollars coming here by uber, but the way back by taxi was somehow about "3 times more"! And, it was both reasonable admission prices (one for the IMAX & one for "the museum plus the viewing deck" since those two being in the same building) of 20 dollars each for the total of 40.

Witnessing the locks operation from a bird eye view point was fabulous. Our tour guide was very helpful, experienced and full of information.

We had such an amazing experience watching the ships passed through the canal locks from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. What more is to actual view the making of the canal vicariously. Its a marvel of nan's ingenuity. Thank you to our amazing guide Raphael. I have already recommended the tour to friends Thank you Raphael for the experience of seeing such an amazing craftmanship
