Don’t book a tour with this operator. They did not show up for the tour and did not cancel it. We had another tour booked to San Blas islands (different tour operator) and the operator promptly canceled the tour due to the pandemic before our arrival in the country so we were able to plan for another excursion. This tour operator (ivantour) did not cancel and was unresponsive to multiple attempts to reach them by us and the Panama City tourist police who went above and beyond to help us out. We wasted time and money going to a tour that didn’t happen.

We really wanted to take this tour and we’re very glad we did. It was a very long day (starting at 5:30 am pickup and 7:30 pm drop off) but worth the time. If there was any complaint it would be that the seating was not particularly comfortable (hard plastic chairs on the top deck, which is where you want to spend most of your time). Lots of opportunities for pictures and a good learning experience through the narrator on board. The food was good and the staff were nice. You take a bus ride home which is not particularly exciting but it does take you through a couple of smaller towns. We went on the trip before Covid became an issue so not sure how it would be done now.

It was a great day out. We did the full trip to get the whole experience. It is a long day so just doing the first half could be enough for many people. It's worth staying at a hotel where they will pick up so you don't have to worry about early morning transport, and they will bring you back.

We booked an extra 6 nights in Panama City before joining a group tour of Central America just so that we could take this full day trip from Coast to Coast through the canal. Please be warned - we booked a Thursday flight into Panama City with the trip booked for the Saturday. We thought a day of rest after 25 hours of travel was in order. BUT, 4 months before the trip we were informed the canal authority had changed our day to the Friday and so we had just 5 hours in bed before heading out again. Do leave at least a day between travel and trip so to avoid disappointment. It was absolutely brilliant. Yes it is expensive but we were collected from our hotel at 6.20 am and taken to our boat. On check in we were given bands according to the excursion booked - many only do a partial trip and stop at an Indigenous Village before being taken back to the city. Once the Canal Authority gave the go ahead, we left our harbour at 7.45 and headed for the first locks. There was another day trip boat just doing the partial trip, and we were allocated to travel with them and a luxury sailing boat "Wind Star" as our lock companions. This is to maximise the number of boats that go through on each fill. Through the series of 3 Miraflores locks you gain 82 feet in total. The water is fed from one lock to the next alongside so that water is not wasted. It is all gravity fed, not pumped. The speed with which it all happens is incredible. The larger vessels have to have a guiding line attached bow and stern both sides to help keep them central in the lock. Once through the three locks we continued through the cut and dropped off the passengers who were finishing at the village. We continued through the lake to the Caribbean side where we descended the three locks - by this time 11 hours after starting from the harbour. By the time we docked it was 7.45pm. Our coloured bands also determined which coach we went on and returned to the hotel at about 9.30. Totally exhausted, we fell into be for a long sleep!

We did a partial transit through the Panama Canal with Nexus Tours booked through the Panama City Sunwing Representative, Angelica who was very helpful. We learned the history of the canal and it was fabulous understanding how the locks function. We were followed by a large cargo ship in each of the locks. Our transfers to the boat and return were comfortable and on time. Also enjoyed a very good lunch on the boat. Highly recommended.
