Wonderful tour of the jungle park within Panama City, informative, educational, and at times inspiring. We spotted birds, insects, monkeys, and learned about their living environment. Our tour guide was very personable, spoke perfect English, and was versed in the science, history, and politics of the natural habitat and Panama in general. The time flew by.

Completely shocked by the behaviour of the tour guide of the monkey islands. The guide was feeding monkeys crisps (very bad for them), was STROKING the monkey which is a big no-no, and to top it off handed the monkey a bottle of suncream which he obviously ran-off with, which will now spend many years as litter on the island or in the lake. When my concern was expressed there was no reaction, just laughter. Absolutely ignorant, irresponsible and unprofessional behaviour. Do not use if you want an environmentally responsible tour operator.

Response from Ancon-Expeditions, General Manager at Ancon Expeditions of Panama
Responded 13 Mar 2020
Dear Roobsontour from Howick, South Africa: We are also in shock after reviewing your report. Ancon Expeditions of Panama has been championing nature conservation in Panama by way of responsible tourism for over 20 years. Specifically in Gatun Lake we follow strict self-imposed regulations (as there no official ones) to not only protect the wildlife’s well-being, but also that of our travelers. We chase and even sue individuals and companies that conduct unethical and dangerous activities including allowing wildlife on boats and feeding them. Please provide the date you took the tour in question with us and the name of the naturalist guide who lead the tour and/or the name of the boatman so that we can open an investigation right away in order clarify the incident. My direct contact information is found below. Yours sincerely, Marco Gandasegui Director Ancon Expeditions of Panama marcog@anconexpeditions.com

Robert Maduro was our guide for the art and history city tour of Panama City, including the Panama Canal Museum. Robert was engaging, knowledgeable and interesting. He was familiar with the area and the local history. I recommend him highly.

Ancon put together a custom tour for us of the Panama Viejo, the downtown and the Old Quarter and Miraflores locks. We had finished a cruise at Colon and took a basic transfer to the cruise hotel in Panama where Ancon met us. Our guide Carlos was excellent on both the colonial and more recent history. Without feeling rushed he showed us lots of interesting detail. The pacing and planning that he had put into the tour was very impressive. We found Panama City was really interesting and worth a future stay of several days. We expect tourism there is only going to expand and you can see the rapid development of both the modern city and the investment in the Old Quarter.

My wife and purchased a condo in Panama City just over a year ago; and with that now ready to move in, the time had come to start exploring beyond the city. We reached out to Mauricio at Ancon Expeditions, to plan some day excursions. We settled on San Blas one day, and whale watching and a visit to the Pearl Islands the next. Mauricio planned each day to perfection. The itinerary was personalized to maximize our enjoyment, and the execution was flawless. Both days we were picked up from our condo, right on time, delivered to the necessary boats and ferries, and met by our designated personal guides on schedule. Our guides were friendly and knowledgeable, warmly inviting us to enjoy their beautiful country. In San Blas our guide, Mr. Davis, is native Kuna who lived there all his life as did multiple generations of his family before him. His local knowledge and deep sense of history were a delight; and we had the extra treat of watching him weave a basket from palm fronds, a basket he was going to use the following day in a ceremony welcoming visitors from other islands to a large assembly to elect community leaders. Our guide in Las Perlas for whale watching, Guillermo, was simply superb, a professional in all senses of the word. He followed all the strict rules of whale watching: only run in parallel or away from the whales, never toward; never run in front of the whales (it will feel to them like being herded); never approach the whales within 200 meters; and always keep the engine idling so the whales can easily determine your position. Whales can get closer if they choose. His boat was comfortable, spotlessly clean and well maintained. Guillermo is an able captain and a wonderful guide. I can think of no better means of whale watching in Panama. Ancon Expeditions and Mauricio came through for us without a single hiccup. The excursions were perfectly planned and perfectly executed. We look forward to working with them again on our upcoming adventures. I could not imagine using the services of any other travel agent for anything Panama.
