Must be seen and rememberes as Mestrovic's masterpieces are so special and strong that you cannot avoid them, Mestrovic's Galery on the Upper town is second location where visitor should go if interested in Mestrovic's work and art

You'll come across this monument if you are visiting the National Theatre, although it's quite well hidden. Worth stopping to see if you're in the area, but not worth seeking out for it's own sake.

The sculpture of the fountain itself is beautiful, set within a small modernist circular theatre. It makes for a nice contemporary counterpoint to the baroque architecture of the National Theatre behind it. The area was also a great gathering point for theatre-goers, especially the younger...More

As I understood, this supposed to be a fountain. All the fauntains in the city were operating, just not his one. But, a lot of artists were painting around, so it was interesting. It is hidden in fron of HNK.

The author is Ivan Meštrović, the greatest croatian sculpturer. The well is aurrounded by benches (steps) at the great square - between National theatre (opera) and headquoters of Zagreb's university).

Place is not the best for this Well of Life. Stone square with several busy streets and huge building of the Theatre are too large. Expressionism of Meštrović needs special care to keep all the fine details of the sculpture. Pity.

Ivan Meštrović was part of circle of Croatian artists which was part of Vienna Secession or Art nouveau movement. As young student he went from Dalmatia to Vienna in 1900. and was in a circle of artists as Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann etc....More
