One of the oldest Christian churches in the Balkans. Simple but stylish, hiding a preasuce gem in the basement for everybody loving archeology

This church stands proud of being a true representative of Sofia. It must be the oldest church here and is in very good and strong standing in the capital. It may not be as majestic as the others externally but inside its very beautiful with...More

It was a very nice surprise which I discovered during my last trip to Sofia, this spring. I had not seen it before, but it was on my list. Although we were caught in a winter-like weather, I still tried to visit some interesting cultural...More

When in the center this church is definitely worth visiting, as it is the oldest building in the city.

looks quite plain on the outside and church is very interesting. But the work done on the lower levels is outstanding and make this a must see place.

Wonderful building, both outside and inside. There were wedding ceremonies around and inside, so it was really happily all around.

The average visitor passing by this rather humble-looking church would probably have no idea of the vast necropolis that lies beneath it: tombs of varying styles spanning several centuries (2nd century BC - 4th century AD), a mosaic floor and a colourful frescoed vault. The...More

The church itself if beautiful, and unusual in red brick, but underneath there is a vast area of remains of previous churches and burial chambers with some mosaics and frescoes. Very atmospheric. There is a small charge to visit the ruins.

One of the oldest churches in Sofia, this was at one time converted into a mosque. In the basement are many early tombs including one beautifully painted with tulips. The remains of a mosaic floor are also viewable.

I would agree with what's posted above and add a few points. Find the central Mosque, it's close to the 'Largo' with all it's wonderful Roman ruins on display. Wander down Pirotska St, you'll pass the old indoor market and... More
