As some of the other reviews have mentioned, getting to Marcahuasi is not for the faint of heart. You take a road that’s cut into the mountainside (picture attached) that you drive too ridiculously fast up. The hike up isn’t a beginner’s hike - it’s only a mile from where you park but it has a steep incline and the altitude can hit you quickly if you’re not used to it, which I wasn’t. But I stopped and rested A LOT and managed to make it okay. I was quite short of breath and a little light headed. I started to get a headache toward the end but it went away by the time we reached Lima. I did take some Gravol that I had gotten at the pharmacy the night before, as well as some Excedrin. But it was all worth it. By the time I reached the cliffs at the top I was a little emotional. It was an unforgettable moment. I’d highly recommend the Stone Forest. Bring sunscreen, a hat, some good walking shoes, and water.

There was nothing there - we hiked to the top, prepared some herbs - And froze. Back then the people were friendly and a lot strange stuff went on. Dunno about now

My partner and I went to Marcahuasi in early February of 2019. The experience was magical! At 4,000 m above sea level Marcahuasi makes for some incredible sights. It was the rainy season so we were met with very thick fog which made for a very mystic experience. We were also able to see what locals call the ‘colchón de nubes’ or ‘mattress of clouds’ which means at the highest point you can look down and see a bed of clouds below you. We booked a tour to Marcahuasi with a tour agency we found on Facebook named: Adventure Extreme Peru, the tour guide was Aldair. We paid 160 soles per person, which included the tour guide and the transportation. We left at 6:00 am on Saturday and were back in Lima at 6:00 pm on Sunday night. Aldair was a fabulous guide, telling us stories, history and culture. The tour group was composed of about 9 people, we had a bonfire at night and it was very enjoyable. Marchahuasi is very cold and it is very important to bring warm clothes. We rented a tent and sleeping bags at the town of San Pedro de Casta (The sleeping bag was 25 S/ each and a tent for both of us was 40 S) they were very high quality! Although the journey through the windy roads is intense and the altitude sickness can be strong at the top, it was an incredible experience worth all the trouble!! I will be back :)

I booked a day trip from Lima to Marcahuasi with Carlos. (I'm not sure why I am not able to post a review to his page, but this is the link if it is of interest: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/AttractionProductDetail-g294316-d14226628-Off_road_in_Marcahuasi-Lima_Lima_Region.html?from_tpa=true It was a few hours drive with Carlos in his off-road vehicle, through some interesting towns and up some steep, rocky, mountain roads. Carlos was very knowledgable and it was evident that he loves what he does. His rescue dog Cusi even came along for the ride. The ride up the mountain was a blast and the views were stunning. For us it was actually a really great way to start acclimating to the altitude for when we went to Cusco a few days earlier, as the Marcahuasi Stone forest is quite a bit higher than Lima. The hike up was fairly easy, wide dirt paths, and no scrambling, but we felt the effects of the altitude a little bit at the top. (Just a little light headedness) Carlos treated us to the best fish lunch at a local patio in San Pedro, the town right below Marcahuasi. All in all a great day. I would highly reccomend going with Carlos. He was awesomet to hang out with and we learned so much more than if we tried to go on our own. His vehicle was also a lot safer on the switchbacks than the collectivos.

Either be in fit shape or leave more time to enjoy the trek. I am 75 and the elevation change really hit me. The thing I did not like was how "tourists" have disrespected the area by leave their trash all over the trail and site. Whatever happened to "take only pictures, leave only footprints" there is a lot written about Marcahuasi..I found myself repeating WOW countless times.
