Lima is the first point to visit arriving in Peru, the architecture of the colonial buildings are an interesting attraction to admire, they are full of commercial stores, restaurants, which makes it a fairly crowded place, I really enjoyed touring part of the city ...

Lima was founded by Spanish "Conquistador" Francisco Pizarro right on January 18, 1535, when he designated the very site where the "Plaza Mayor" (also known as "Plaza de Armas") would be placed. "Plaza Mayor" is a central square that is very commonly found in all Spain's influenced cities. And in Lima it is not different. The city grew around Pizarro's "Plaza Mayor" and the whole area is today known as "Cercado de Lima", the city's historic center. Visiting it takes time! Guided visits are recommended, but you can certainly due it on your own, since Lima is very friendly and safe for visitors (and that was my personal impression as of October 2019). Take your time and enjoy "Cercado de Lima" - and just remember, in 1988, Unesco appointed it as a "World Heritage Site", due to its originality and high concentration of historic monuments. You cannot miss it! Enjoy!

The historic center of Lima is better than we expected but could still use some tender loving care. The buildings are wonderful and some are in great condition. However, others are in dire need or restoration. We saw this area on a guided walking tour of this area purchased from Holland America. The changing of the guards was a nice touch. Fantastic!

As squares go, this is a good one! It is at the center of the old town tour. There are many impressive new and old buildings boarding the square. The square is attractive and is a central meeting point. The Presidential Palace is on one side of the square. Therefore, there are a large number of soldiers and guards (some in riot gear) carrying AK 47's and other arms. This may be a little disturbing to some in your group, and you may want to be aware of it in advance. As you enter the square, you will be face to face with them. If you are in the area, make certain you stop here. There are an incredible number of photo opportunities.
