To be honest, I went there 3-4 times in the week I was in Iquitos. I talked to the shoppers, I bought fruits and medicinal plants and I even every time I went, I ate there with the locals. The food tasted great (fish) and I didn´t get sick. Yes, the fact that I lived in India for many years might have helped, but if you are scared of getting sick, you will. Also many people say and even here posted that it´s dangerous and one should take care of the belongings. The first time I went there I didn´t know about it, and I only took the same care as I do when I go to any market in the world. And after I knew of "the danger" still I went taking the same care. Nothing happened and I really enjoyed my time there. The most dangerous part is, when the people is scared of it. Or better say, only westerners are scared of going there and they don´t go alone and only with guides... Sorry, I think that is really ridiculous. And if you want to buy Ayahuasca, or San Pedro Cactus, or things like that, you can find it there very easily, and much cheaper than if you buy to the "shamans" of the hundreds of them who do "rituals" with the foreigners for hundreds of dollars. About the quality, I can´t say because I didn´t buy it. Ah, to the locals, it is known as "Pasaje Paquito" (at least the area where you buy the medicinal plants).

Interesting market showing the reality of the lowest side of Iquitos population. Dirty, filthy and chaotic and overall improvised market. Definitely a waste of a hidden potential. Local Government should invest on reorganize the market and set up cleaning times. Poor does not mean you will be dirty. With a solid reorganization plan this place could be a gem in the middle of the Amazon.

Perhaps the best place in Iquitos to know the local food, plants, fruits, fish and a lot of other stuff usually sold in a genuine Amazonian market.

Be prepared to be dazzled by the characteur and variety of peculiar products. A must see but probably with a guide and your personal belongings in a safe location. Walk through it , taste and smell. Try to experiment if you dare
