While acclimating to the elevation in Cusco, we took a day tour to the small village of Amaru just outside Pisac, in the mountains. We were welcomed by a group of 2 men and 4 women, with flower petals, with flute music and drum beats, with a wardrobe of traditional clothes. We were taken to the fields to participate in a ceremony to bless the land, to demonstrate the traditional farming implements, to learn about traditional plants/herbs. Then we had a delicious 3 course lunch freshly prepared by the women of the village. Afterward, we were shown how alpaca wool is spun, washed, dyed and then the various techniques of weaving was demonstrated. We then had the opportunity to purchase items made in the village by some of the women in the welcome committee. Their work was beautiful and the prices were 1/3 of that charged in Cusco stores, specialty shops. Bring cash!! We spent all the Nuevo soles that we had, but converted to US$ for another piece. Wish I had brought more cash. An absolute fabulous experience, well worth the day and not a big, phony show. Gregorio is the lead villager who is a medicine man and very interested in passing on traditional knowledge, lore, and culture. Sincere, true, and from the heart.
