A fine plaza mayor bookended by the cathedral and the ayuntamiento the Plaza de Armas offers lots of benches, an interesting fountain and plantings, and is clearly a hub of local life. A tired tourist can find a seat on a bench and watch local life pass by, a perfect setting for a bit of rest and relaxation after seeing... More

this is a very spacious and architectonically most beautiful plaza de armas of any spanish colonial cities. the whole plaza is one piece of architecture. in addition the cathedral is very imposing filling one whole side of the plaza.

We just loved the Plaza de Armas in Arequipa. The many arcades and bars that flank it are ideal to sit in as the sun goes down. Lovely energy to the square and it's full of friendly locals. Nice and leafy with lots of benches to sit on and chill watching life pass you by. The volcanoes tower about the... More

A nice mix of tourists and locals, with pleasant greenery and benches to sit on (though you can't sit on the greenery). A few tourists restaurants on the level above are worth a visit to get a nice view over looking everything, especially with the surrounding views of the cathedral and distant mountains. Good place to spend a few hours... More

For me, Arequipa is Peru's most beautiful city and the main square says so much of its past. The city has many colonial influences but it is at the same time defined by the building materials found around the city. it gave the main square a familiar feeling while the palm trees make it feel exotic. It's a really nice... More

The beautiful old Spanish cathedral of sillar is set against a well kept park. Sitting on one of the many benches you can enjoy people watching amidst the palm trees that surround a pond and fountain. Around the square are many shops including an arade with many local crafts

An abundance of shade and benches with several large trees, relatively few people badgering you for tourist sales, some attractive architecture, and two large mountains going up to +- 20,000'. Stay at the Katari Hotel and enjoy your morning brunch, or an evening drink, on the rooftop terrace with a view of all of the above.
