A short visit

The visit to this plaza was lovely and we were with a tour guide and group. Charming to see and historical information was interesting.

The Plaza San Francisco stands in front of the Convento de San Francisco, the oldest church/ monastery complex in Quito. The plaza is surrounded by colonial buildings and has a fountain near the center. In pre-conquest times the plaza was a market place and it served the same function after the conquest, as well as a place for bull fighting.... More

This is a large square in front of the Church of the same name. On a slope - is a good hike but you also get good views from the top. Few sellers and beggars around and not as much police presence as other parts of town.

with San Franciso cathedral domination the plaza of restored 18th & 19th century houses, overlooking a city packed with domes, spires and, in the distance, the snows of Cotopaxi volcano.

San Francisco Church and the Casa Gangotena corner this plaza. If walking around, it is best to have a local quide for safety reasons.

Tourist Police mean that this square not only has the architecture that everywhere else does, but you can relax and feel safe as well.

This is the place to sit and watch the world go by whist you enjoy a simple but well prepared lunch. Local musician plays and sing close by and will come and ask for a contribution, but doesn’t not hassle you for money, only asks if you want to buy a CD and will accept no if you don’t wish... More

I was having a bit of a hard time breathing in Quito - plus we only had one afternoon. We enjoyed just sitting and watching families and especially the kids. The people from this city are very friendly. I asked one woman what fruit she was eating. She couldn't understand me but gave me my own to eat.

The plaza outside San Francisco has been painstakingly refurbished and is a beautiful photo opportunity.

A large open space, dominated by pigeon droppings, so be very careful where you sit. Not a particularly attractive square, which is sometimes, used to present art displays that still fail to bring any attractiveness to this space. Some of the surrounding architecture is its only redeeming feature.
