The driving in Valparaiso is a bit crazy, so we hired a local van to drive through the old area of the city and up and down steep winding street which had political and artistic wall painting on many bars and private homes.

So this is the town that sailors used to stop at prior to and after rounding Cape Horn. I can imagine some of stories lol. We took a half day city tour in a minibus and it was excellent. I believe the city is built on 48 hills and it felt like we went up all of them. lots of... More

We spent nearly 3 hours to walk around this wonderful historic town not far away from the capital. Plenty of spots for photos.

The historic city is fun, with beautiful murals, winding cobble streets, great restaurant and crazy finicular(Ascensors). This is a city with vibe and soul. amble through the twisting lanes and enjoy the murals and atmosphere. ,

Have spent last 3 days wandering around the Historic Quarter of Valparaiso. Lots of stairs as this area is built into the side of the small mountain. Lots of great street art, great nooks and cranes, fabulous photography opportunities and hundreds of quaint restaurants and bars. Walk to the bottom ,then take a taxito the top and walk down another... More

The historic center of Valparaiso is very charming with the multi-coloured houses, cobblestone streets some of which are extremely steep. Most of the houses are very rundown and in heavy need of repair. The houses are covered with corrugated sheets, not beautiful but quite interesting. The corrugated sheets were to protect the houses from the salty winds from the Pacific.... More

A guided tour of the historic areas of Valparaiso is very rewarding in many ways. A combination of winding roads among older houses and stores high above the ocean. You can walk up the roads or take the funicular rail up to the high levels for a fabulous view across the ocean and down to the business areas of the... More

We saw many beautiful buildings and many great examples of street art. We loved the sign that said "We are not hippies, we are happies!"

Valparaiso is a fascinating mix of old and new. The bohemian old quarter has cobbled street, pretty brightly painted houses, cool street art/graffiti and nice cafes. The particalky vertical streets are amazing, Casa Sebastaian (pablo Neruda's home) is worth visiting as are the cemeteries. The downtown area is quite run down and the port area is just a port! We walked around that area on our last day there and wished we went somewhere else as we were harass by so many locals and almost got pickpocket-ted once. The place is literally falling apart and somewhat dangerous even if you are a local. There are some neat architecture and cool art graffiti, but that's pretty much it.
