Strategically located in Malioboro Street with really affordable enterance fee. Exhibits consisted by touchscreen monitor (which some of them were broken) and dioramas. The pre-independence part of the museum was nice, but the new order part of the museum was full of propaganda. However, they had interactive, historical game touchscreen exhibit that was really fun.

This museum is known as Benteng Vredeburg (Fort Vredeburg) as it used to be a Dutch fort during collonialism era. There are several buildings inside, each one has different collections and diorama. You can watch a short movie about the fort and how Indonesia claimed back its independence. The place is nice, clean, and very informative. Admission ticket is very... More

I must confess that although I knew the Dutch had colonized Indonesia, I didn't know many details. I found the dioramas and written summary of events quite interesting and I definitely learned a lot.

The whole place is a well preserved and maintained dutch fort. I don't really like how each bit of information is accompanied by a display that kind of shows what it was like. Most are quite boring and don't really add anything to it. But the actual information given is informative. It's also interesting to see the struggle for independence... More

Ticket price is ultra cheap, IDR 2,000 for domestic visitors, there are 4 halls contain diorama of history of Yogyakarta, several mannequins, historical artifacts, etc. The place is clean and tidy, several unique bicycles are available for hire to cycle around the area.

In our opinion this museum was just ok. Mostly just dioramas to look at from room to room. There are some military pieces to see. If you want to watch our YouTube review, search Martin Johnson Dutch Fort Yogyakarta" :)

The museum displays parts of the more recent history of Indonesia, but instead of using documents, photos, or other artifacts from the past, it displays poorly made "scenarios" that try to stage how each event took place (although many just show the figures sitting in a meeting). The grounds of the museum are well maintained, and can be pleasant to... More

The fortress was a stronghold for the the dutch and place to watch the sultan, the fortress is very near the keraton. Nowadays the fortress turned into a museum to remembering the fight for independence
