About
Hiking Mount Agung is a memorable experience—the active volcano is considered a sacred site, and the climb offers sweeping views of Bali. You can hike up to either the crater rim or the peak, the latter being the more challenging option. April to October offer the best conditions, with better visibility and less chance of rain. Hiring an experienced guide is a must, and climbers should have an adequate fitness level. Bring a headlamp and a trekking pole, and dress appropriately for cold conditions at the top. You’ll depart at midnight and aim to summit in time for sunrise. – Tripadvisor

- Venu K8 contributionsOn the top of BaliOn a vacation here and decided to do something adventurous. Found Wayan's contact online and everything fell in place after that. He took care of everything end to end, from pickup to taking us on the hike to dropoff and even helped me procure hiking shoes when I could not find my size in local stores. The hike itself was pretty tough as it is a relentless climb and pretty slippery on the way down. The guides were really helpful in pacing us and taking care of us. - GingeandtheTwinsAsheville, North Carolina2 contributionsWe hiked Mt Agung in November 2023 and it is STRENUOUS, read this before you hike!!We just hiked Mt Agung 10 days ago from Besakih temple and it was a very difficult hike! You can watch a video about our review in Youtube. It took us 13 hours to complete the hike and I think the most important things to mention are: 1. Bring your own gear instead of accepting the one provided by your guides. 2. Don't do it if you're not in shape and if you don't want to risk getting injured during a nice, relaxing vacation (the risk of injury is really high). 3. Do it with a guide! 4. Bring hiking poles, 3 litters of water per person, and great hiking shoes. Good luck!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 December 2023

Photo of Agung is beautiful. Well done to thrill seeking climbers who made the effort to scale. My English is not very well but I still want to share this incredible experience with all of you. Long before going to Bali for vacation, I've heard about this highest mount in Bali called Mount Agung, a holy mountain for natives. I really like to take challenge so I decided to climb it. If you want to climb, I strongly recommend you to contact Wayan on whatshapp number +6282341344030, a super professional and warm guide.
What I want to emphasize is that Mount Agung is really hard for fresh climber, we chose a relative easier route(total two routes) which took us nearly 11 hours to climb up and down, from 1a.m. to 12a.m.. And there is no path after going through the jungle because its a valcano and there are rocks and rocks, you must be extremely cautious and careful!!!!
With the help of Wayan, We got to the top on 5:55 and at first we cannot see sunrise because of cloudy weather. Fortunately enough surrounding scenery became clear soon, and we can enjoy the splendid sunrise and huge crater of Agung. I would never forget the sense of achievement at that moment.
When climbing down, because Im too tired, Wayan help to take my backpack, he is so strong and familiar to this Mountain.

The pick up was at 11.30am from my hotel in Ubud. I am a 51 year old female with good fitness and hence was anxious that I would be able to summit.
I was introduced to my guide Wayan who had limited english however Wayan has been doing this trek for 25 year and immediately I knew I was in the best and most experienced hands of Ubud.
We were served friend banana and hot coffee before we set off.
It was cold and this went down fantastically well.
It is a trek for people who have a good level of fitness and it is steep where majority of trek is walking on loose rocks.
Bring your own headlight, warm gear and proper hiking boots.
We stop for several breaks and the guides light fires which we sat around and served strong hot coffee.
Wayan kept offering me banana bread at the breaks which I took as need the energy.
The breaks are pinnacle as the legs need a short reprieve after the uphill grind.
The stars were out on a perfectly clear night and was an awesome experince sitting on the side of this mountain, drinking coffee watching the lights below.
The last km is very challenging and again,Wayah reminded me to follow his feet. You clamber at this stage and can only see head lights of those ahead of tou.
Upon reaching the summit, we were a little early for the sunrise and sat around a fire and were served a breakfast of bread, boiled eggs and bananas which I gladly ate and need the protein and energy.
The wind blew and it was freezing.
The sunrise was spectacular and a reminder of How Great Tho Art.
We took many pics and then started the down ascent which required extreme concentration.
With the sun up, you become aware of just how far you have climbed upwards and am very relieved that I did not see this going up and frankly, not sure I would have preceded as it is trechous come down with the loose rocks.
My knee took a pounding as just down and more down.
My journey of Mt Angung is an exceptional one and possibly is of most challenging trek I have done.
Again "shout out" to Wayan from Ubud Sun rise Trekking as without this man experi ce and encourage I would not have reached the summit.
He also sang on the way down wich was delightful as took the " edge off" the daunting beginning decent.
Food, water and concern was continually being offered which made me know I was in excellent hands.
An overall incredible experince and I would recommend to anyone thinking of it....DO IT

Hiked up Mount Agung’s crater rim with Wayan’s company and could not fault it. We were picked up at 11pm (staying at Seminyak) and arrived at the starting point at 1am. We started our ascent at 1:30am and arrived safely at 5:30am before the sunrise. Personally, the climb itself is mentally challenging as opposed to physical. The climb is broken down into 3 phases with the first phase being a steep walk through the woods/jungle which gradually turns into phase 2: rocky pathway. The final stage is the most arduous which required partial climbing if one is not familiar with rock face trekking. Fitness wise it’s a great workout but I’d suggest being mentally prepared at the gravity of it all as it becomes overwhelming with the steepness, lack of sleep and uncertainty of where the actual end point is. Sunrise was gorgeous with our guide offering coffee, tea, snacks and noodles. The descent can be a little tough on the knees but doable. We managed to arrive back on site in 3 hours and 30 minutes at a steady pace. Hiking pole, headlamp and gloves are provided. I’d strongly suggest to BYO gloves to protect you not just from the cold but for protection from the terrain. Bringing suitable outerwear and wearing appropriate footwear is also suggested as it gets quite cold and windy and the terrain is uneven and extremely rocky. Our guide spoke little English but paced himself to us and strategically moved up the mountain based on the most suitable ascent for our ability. I’d highly recommend this hike and Wayan’s company. Although it was difficult, it’s very rewarding once you’re back on land!

Mt Agung is a tough hike but really worth it to give it a try. Ensure that you are physically fit and mentally fit to attempt climbing it. The ascent was much easier as compared to the descent probably due to the fear of falling. The hike up took us about 4hrs40mins including long breaks in between. And the descent took a similar duration.
We had the best guide, Wayan, he ensured that all our needs were attended to and paced himself according to us. He was really attentive to our physical conditions and gave us ample rest in between. We still managed to reach the lower summit at 5am, in due time for the most magical sunrise we have ever witnessed. Wayan is also the leader of the many guides on Mt Agung. While descending there was a mishap up above us, whereby a German hiker fell and hit her head which started bleeding profusely. Without hestation, Wayan and his team of guides rushed to offer their aid and ensured her safety the entire way down the mountain. It was truly an awesome experience and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

I hiked Mount Agung via the Pura Besakih trail last night unguided with my wife, After a pick-up from a private driver in Ubud around 22:30 (2nd of September 2024), we started at Pura Pengubengan temple. As we are experienced hikers and mountaineers, hiring a guide for this hike was not an option for us and according to our previous research, it is not officially needed. However, when we arrived at the entrance of the hiking trail (there is a small shelter close to the temple), unfortunately there was a bunch of criminals who were in charge of the entrance. When we communicated our plans and wanted to pay the official fee for foreigners (100k IDR) which was even written on a sign on the shelter, one guy told us that foreigners are not allowed to enter without guide and we have to pay 2 million IDR if we want to enter. Of course I declined this, but then the situation got significantly worse as around 8 people were standing around us and at least half of them pulled out their machetes and got closer to threaten us. One of them even grabbed my arm. To deescalate the situation, eventually we paid almost 1 million IDR for the two of us, which is 5 times the official price. The only reason to do so was to get out of this situation without any serious consequences. It seemed like these people were just waiting for us and perfectly prepared to threaten unguided foreigners and make use of the situation and their superior number.
After that, we climbed Mount Agung through the Pura Besakih trail. Even though there is some easy scrambling involved as well as a slightly exposed ridge to the summit, there is nothing to worry about for seasoned hikers. And a guide is certainly not necessary if you are experienced in the mountains. Interestingly, we saw lots of young Indonesian people unguided, most of them with a lack of proper equipment. Most likely we were the only unguided foreigners last night. The views from the top of Agung (Mount Rinjani, Agung crater and the Batur caldera) were outstanding, and usually this would be a five star review.
The Pura Pasar trail might be a better option for foreign unguided hikers, and there is a connection to the actual summit as well. However, we have not tried this hike. But most likely there will be more people, which might prevent such situations.
When we came back from our hike around 10am this morning, there was only one person in the shelter. It might be another option to start the hike at daytime and set up a camp somewhere along the way.

I had a fantastic hike up Mount Agung with my guide Wayan Darta (+6282341344030) - timely pickup, hiking equipment provided, his team also started a campfire to keep us warm, food and coffee were also provided during the hike. Wayan’s team knows Mount Agung really well and I felt safe throughout the hike despite the terrain. Highly recommend Wayan Darta!

Already to start the show at the top is magical, it is a personal experience to push its limits, but the ascent does it at its own pace.
Some tips:
1- Mandatory Guide: it is imperative to know and be accompanied!
2- make the ascent at night to arrive for the sunrise: already because the show is sublime and then because I imagine making this ascent in full sun, I have already sweated and sweated
In the middle of the night I imagine during the day...
3- leave equipped: do not hope to make the ascent with sneakers. Rocks and sand make you slide very quickly. So hiking shoes.
It is very cold at the top, so bonnet gloves, and windproof jacket are de rigueur.don’t hesitate to put on a technical tee shirt to keep the heat
4- it takes a physical condition: the ascent lasts between 4 and 6 hours and 3 hours of descent (harder than the climb). So asthmatics, overweight person, heart problem, fragile as a rule, go your way
5- do not take your children: the terrain is not at all safe, the descent is steep, my husband slipped and could have hurt himself very badly because once thrown nothing stops the fall.
Even if reading this message you are cold I assure you that it is a living experience, the guides know perfectly the terrain and know how to adapt to your pace. Breaks are frequent. Go well equipped, and this is a moment you will never forget

I was trying to do research to see if we could do it and it was pretty much useless. So we decided to go and see for ourselves. At first I was scared going up because in my head it seemed like a vertical climb. At night you cannot really see much and because of the clouds, the trail is visually cut off. I was terrified, and I am a rock climber (indoor though). But then going down I almost laughed at myself. It’s not that bad and you can always go on your behind and use your arms. We had such a phenomenal tour guide and a driver, I think they come in package. Not only a caring and knowledgeable but has such a wonderful personality. Excellent English! He made us feel safe and helped me when needed. And also made the climb fun and insightful. I would highly recommend going with him if you are not sure.

Since the new laws can tourists legally climb Mount Agung?
Written 1 November 2023
Does anyone know if this is safe to climb yet? we would like to do it 12/01/2020 but can’t find definitive information if you can or can’t
Written 10 February 2020
Hey all! Can’t find proper information if Agung is open for hiking from 1st of November! Any updates???
Some guides told me they won’t take a risk and discouraged me to go, same time others say it’s still safe to trek. Last update on Wikipedia was in July that access is restricted due to eruption, but in August people climbed there. Confusing!
Written 31 October 2019
The reviews are very confusing as they suggest the mountain is open for hiking! Is it? I know the volcano was very active recently, how is it now?

Hi
I would like to do hiking 21/22 Sept. Do you know any guide details?contact etc.
Is the rout open ? Everyone says it is close after last eruption. Could you clarify ?

Hi Josi,
Thanks, Sanne

How close can one get to Mount Agung (If not optiong for a trek)? Do you have any tour guide/Driver contacts for it?
Written 20 June 2019
As of now, trek is also restricted due to the activeness of the mountain. When inquired about the same, I was told by the local operators and taxi drivers that, tourists are not allowed near the mount.
