The Western Market is easily accessible by tram. It is not very large. This historic building once had been a food market. It still sported two UK red phone boxes. Upstairs was a collection of shops selling materials - this was the place to purchase silk by the roll (or piece). Catching a tram which commences its journey from here,... More

Beautiful building and even better textile. So many fabrics vendors inside selling beautiful textiles. Hard to choose!

Do not waste your time. Duck in to get a blast of AC otherwise skip it. 1st floor just a bunch of tourist junk. 2nd floor jammed with non organized fabric. 3rd floor a massive Chinese restaurant. People talk about the fabric, but hit a true tailor market for the best choices in fabrics.

The Western Market sits at the end of Des Voeux Road Central in Sheung Wan and is opposite the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal at Shan Tak Center. Inside the building there are a few shops with some selling fabric and textiles to tie the building to its historical past. However the star of the building is the desert shops... More

When I was walking around I saw this building Western Market by surprise. This looks great from the outside. Inside lots of fabric shops and small restaurants.

I am a crafter, I am a fabric o holic, normally fabric shops have me parking my husband somewhere for a while, in fact I made him bring his book to read whilst "I may be a while". We made a special trip to come here whilst staying in Kowloon using the high walkways and the mid level escalators, walking... More

Nothing special. Just a nice looking building. Not much inside. Surrounding area more interesting with local traders etc. Good traditional restaurant near by Yaun Kee. Good service. Have English menus and cheap food.

A listed building that is pretty and photogenic. Worth visiting just to see the building. The shops inside are nothing special and look to be on last legs. Not something a typical shopper would be looking for unless you like cloth.

I have heard people talking about the western market the last 2 times I was in Hong Kong. I stopped in because I was walking past the building. It is not worth a special trip to see the market. It is OK if you are walking past.

Staying in Sheung Wan

Neighbourhood Profile
Sheung Wan
Unlike most of Hong Kong’s other popular districts, Sheung Wan welcomes wanderers with an easy-going, relaxed atmosphere. Art galleries are plentiful and boutique cafés are tucked away in every side street in the sub district known as “PoHo.” Browse through the vintage clothing and handmade leather goods stores – it’s no surprise fashionistas flock to this area. History enthusiasts will be rewarded with sites of beautiful architecture, reflecting Sheung Wan’s past as one of the earliest settlements by British forces. As night falls, the entertainment scene reveals itself to be just as laid back with its private kitchens, speakeasies and underground bars dotted throughout the area. When in Sheung Wan, everyday feels like the weekend.
