There is a need to walk up the slope and steps to get to the temple. The history behind the statues are colourful, and it would be advantageous if you can get a guide to explain.

Learned a lot about China and its ghosts and enjoyed the many temple and display areas. Lots of touristy opportunities and you will be photographed there at one spot and they will try and sell you the photo. We bought it since it was a...More

lots of stairs but pretty easy to walk... very interesting with lovely gardens, pagodas and displays... the punishment displays are pretty graphic in a cartoonish way

I enjoyed this excursion from Yangtze cruise. But it is quite a climb so you must possess at least average fitness.

The main attraction for me was at the top of the steep hill. The ghost emperor's torture chamber and temple is unlike most other temples you will see all over China. Long walk up and on a hot day not easy.

Not too sure if climbing up all those steps in the pouring rain was worth it. It might be strange for westerners to understand the Chinese view of passing the different stages of "judgement" and Hell. The scary figures are not for kids.

Be advised there are 500 steps. We were the only Occidentals on the tour from a cruise ship that was about 50% each. Our fellow westerners missed a worthwhile exploration. The depiction of hell was certainly vivid. It was the only part of the complex...More

Our coach tour stopped here for a couple of hours. Nice stop and an enjoyable wander around. Lots of small shops, some touristy and some not so.

We thought heaven didn't look too inviting with all its goulish images and it made us somewhat worried to see the Temple of Hell. It was here we learned the three trials for ghosts who wanted to enter the nether world. Our guide saw to...More

We were on Victoria Anna last September doing the three nights/four days downstream from Chongqing to Yichang with the Executive Deck Program. I believe the ship was refurbished just a couple of years back but the cabin we... More
