We visited the Three Gorges Museum in Chongqing on our way to the airport, after taking a Yangtze River cruise from Yichang to Chongqing. The museum was formally opened to the public in 2005 and has several floors of exhibits, with permanent and temporary exhibits. There's a little bit of everything here: Paintings, sculpture, pottery, history of Chinese currency, and... More

This is a marvel of Chinese engineering and is a worthwhile excursion from a tour ship. Requires some stair climbing.

I generally enjoyed visiting the museum. The exhibits are largely photographic with several models demonstrating the lock system and power generation operation. One can be in and out in about an hour and a visit is essentially mandatory for a Yangtze cruise experience. Just my thoughts.

An interesting visit to see the history of the Three gorges area that has now culminated in the largest dam in the world. Quite a few steps out the front. Accessible by metro train station, but if limited time best to arrange a day tour of Chongqing with driver and guide. Just check opening days - not open on Mondays... More

We really loved visiting this museum but because of limited time, only saw sections of it. As we already visited the museum at Yichang, we concentrated on the photos/information of war time history against the Japanese at Chongqing. Would recommend spending a whole day there next time.

Worth a visit if you're going on the cruise to understand the history behind it. Also a part with memorial to the fallen from Second World War.

No time to travel the entire three gorges? Just visit the museum and it will bring you thru the gorges a 3D tour. I also learnt about Chongqing at WWII in another section of the museum.

Visited this museum after enjoying a 5 day / 4 night Yangtze River Gorge upstream druise from Yichang to Chongqing. The ground floor part of this large, modern and well maintained museum highlights both the construction of the dam and the flora and fauna of the Three Gorges area. Much of the information is highlighted in the form of recreated... More

We spent several hours here observing the ship locks at the 3 Gorges dam. Unfortunately we were unable to observe the ship lift in action, which I am sure is an awesome sight.

They do say than some museums are worth a visit on a wet day and this summed this one up. It was dipping down with rain so it was nice to go somewhere dry. Modern museum with several good exhibitions and a few dull ones. Nice coffee shop and gift shop. Seen it, done it, would not rush to return.
