Located in the heart of modern China and the site for massive parades and rallies, this was the site when in 1949, from a rostrum on the Gate of Heavenly Peace, Chairman Mao announced the establishment of the People's Republic of China.

We all remember what happened there and it's somewhat of an emotional experience just standing in the middle of this huge square. It is clean, safe (a lot of security cameras), the various sculptures to honour those who fought during the revolution, the coloured trimmed...More

Cool to be here but you get corralled so quickly into the gates to go the forbidden city you don't get a chance to really see it. There's so many people around and a very busy road in front of the gate. The road is...More

The history makes this square special, but there's nothing really special about it. To me it's the same as with Manneken Pis in Brussels: a must see, but not that special.

Had no idea how big Tiananmen Square is until our visit. Would highly recommend visiting this Square and hearing it's history.

The history in this place and surroundings is so significant that it shouldn't be missed. Having a guide to give overview and facts is also important.

A huge place with statues and beautiful flower beds. There was no shade and it was very hot. Lots of stores sold cold drinks. Like many things in China the scale is huge!

The place is impressive and our guide was great on explaining the history and the current use of each building. Very important: try to avoid the hottest hours, there is no shade to hide from the sun!
