Missed the early flag raising but the lowering just as good

We tried to get to the dawn flag raising but were late so went back towards dusk for the lowering. stood waiting for over an hour to be at the front, well worth it. They do pomp... read more

I did make a special trip because I heard the procession would be very cool. I wish I hadn’t woken up so early and made the trip. It’s not a bucket list event. If you are staying within walking distance of the Forbidden City then you have no excuse but to visit the flag ceremony. You'll pass through lots of security but quickly and without any hassle. Completely packed with tourists, pushing and shoving. Not very easy to see, and not much to actually see anyway. They march out, play the national anthem and raise the flag, then that is it. I hoped there would be more ceremony and I wasn't in the mood to endure more pushing so early in the morning.
