About
Fort Jesus is Mombasa’s most popular tourist attraction. The fort, located along the coastline near the Old Town, is a monumental piece of architecture that was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. The fort has a museum that displays various artifacts from the era where Mombasa served as a transit point for the slave trade and commodities, and which enjoyed regular visits by seafarers and the like

Big fortress, great spot in otherwise complicated city. We were there on our own and it was safe and people were really nice. There are students by the entrance ready to give you a commented tour. Nice café/restaurant is inside the fortress.

Your trip to Mombasa City cannot be complete without visiting the Fort Jesus. As UNESCO puts it, it's one of the most outstanding and well preserved examples of 16th Portuguese military fortification and a landmark in the history of this type of construction.

Besides history, there are plenty of other things to see and do in and around Fort Jesus. You can explore the narrow streets of Mombasa Old Town, enjoy the beautiful scenery, try out local cuisines, etc. You can also get a bird's view of the ocean right from Fort Jesus.

The experience was great.. Especially with a tour guide it felt like traveling back time when I was there. My best experience was when I was able to climb to the towers that were overlooking the ocean

I read up before going. Locals say it's dandy. Foreigners say it's poorly maintained with little to see. The latter pay six times more for entry. Perhaps this disparity colors value propositions as indicated in reviews.

I went to fort but couldn't bring myself to pay $12 for what I'd read about. Turning to leave, staff asked why. I told them, and they started haggling. I didn't feel like going down that road knowing perhaps if I paid the full amount it was official, and if I paid a lesser amount it was into someone's pockets.

I was happier walking around outer walls and somehow keeping my dignity shielded, for a brief moment, from this unfortunate game of overcharging and/or scamming foreigners.

It really gets old, Kenya. Such practices don't net positive for your tourism sector.

Very interesting place with lots to see and learn. I would definitely suggest hiring a knowledgable tour guide - I reviewed the one that we had - Humphrey at Walking Tour Through Old Town Mombasa and Fort Jesus. Not only did I learn a lot about the very interesting history of the Fort, but also about the surrounding area and buildings of Old Town. It is definitely worth it. You are able to not only listen to things, you are also able to learn by experiencing and asking questions. Regardless of the amount of time you spend in Mombassa - day-trip or a few days. Definitely go here!

An interesting historical site but badly kept. The management are not doing their job. As an UNESCO heritage site it must benefit from some funding (and you pay an entrance fee to get in) - where has all the money gone? The information signs are bleached by the sun such that you can’t read them and the amount of litter throughout the site is incredibly disappointing. Given that Kenya employs 50+ people to cut a lawn (rather than invest in a lawn mower so that they are employing people), they should employ people to do litter sweeps of the site.
A good site to see due to its significance in the area but just don’t expect much.
We paid for a guide from outside for an extra 1,000 ksh and he was ok.
