I had read about Townhouse Gallery in the New York Times and put it on my list when visiting Cairo in January. It was a highlight of my trip, which included all the wonderful things Egypt offers. Townhouse is not a chilly white box gallery. The gallery is full of life. It includes a large exhibition space that was showing... More

absolutely loved the Amgard Naguib exhibition currently on display and will have to return as there is so much detail and needs time - wonderfully curated and delighted with the guidance of staff, especially Karim - thank you for majorly contributing to keeping Cairo vibrant - exhibition is free to enter and the whole area is historical and quaint and... You like contemporary? Then go there. Yes, the area is not that spectacular. But the gallery wows me every time. Like and dislike in art is also a matter of taste. Decide for yourself.

It's worth visiting to see local Egyptian artists who are desperate for venues. The little adjoining store is not too great. The storekeeper managed to convince me to buy a terrible CD... More

I am based in Cairo for what ends up adding up to several months out of the year and have found myself pining for the museums and other cultural events which I left behind in my hometown of Washington,DC. Once grounded in my flat, new office and after meeting a few locally based friends, I was introduced to the alternative... More

The story behind this gallery is inspirational ... They brought the power of art to a blue collar neighbourhood, involving the locals in their efforts, provided a show space to new artists struggling to be seen and heard, fought off a bureaucracy that fears change... And so much more. Off the beaten track, discover a piece of Cairo tour guides... More
