Very good visit

Although a vast part of the mosque has been cordoned off for restoration, it was still a very good visit to a place that has been known for center of knowledge in Egypt

Even though the place was under renovation, you can walk around and see the beautiful architecture of the time period, inside of the mosque is peaceful and good for having a quiet contemplation away from the bustle of the city.

The building was under renovation at the time but it was still very beautiful. You can get to Al Moaez st. nearby to enjoy being in the charming ancient Islamic Cairo .

Although we were wearing loose clothing that covered our legs, chests, shoulders and heads we were told that we were not covered up enough. A couple of ladies at the entrance however gave us the necessary clothing and were very lovely about it. The building was under renovation at the time but it was still very beautiful. We would have... More

We spent about 1 hour or so walking around the complex and met the imam! Had afternoon tea and delicious tasted Egyptian pizza at the restaurants by the sidewalks. The price is reasonable but a bit of haggling will certainly helped :) It is certainly a place to take a breather after a long walk around the city!

I worried - a bit - about how a westerner would be received - Al Azhar is famously a site of protests after Friday prayer. But I needn't have worried -... More

I will always make it a point to visit and pray in this mosque whenever I come to Cairo. Currently it is being renovated extensively so prayer halls are limited. I was here for Friday prayer. This is one of the many mosques which allow women to pray alongside with men on Friday. This is one of the oldest mosques... More
