The Tjibaou Cultural Center is a bit far out of town but well worth your time. The building is designed by Renzo Piano whom also designed the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The buildings are impressive enough but there is also a small art gallery and room containing Kanak culture and the history of the building and Tjibaou himself. The... More

Outstanding architecture and beautiful gardens make this a must see. It's homage to independence leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou gives the experience a spiritual quality. The displays themselves were interesting but not all that special, but the impression is of a place devoted to the positive development of culture rather than cataloging the past. The gardens include explanations of the relationship of... More

There is a monthly women's market held here in Sunday so we worked out the bus schedules and headed over - market was small but lots of good food and well attended with good atmosphere. As a bonus the center was free that morning so we had a chance to look around. Some interesting art (not much though) inside the... More

We eventually found our way to Tjibou Cultural Centre we had to catch 2 buses and not many people including our hotel knew how to get there or what it was! Such a shame it could be fabulous if the Noumeans took an interest in indigenous culture. It had the most amazing architecture by Reno Piano, the man who designed... More

The buildings and grounds of the Tjibaou Cultural Centre are definitely worth visiting. The soaring large contemporary village huts house galleries and the cafe surrounded by beautiful gardens and walkways. It is a delightful contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Port and city centre of Noumea. The return taxi trip was around $30AUD, although there may be other... More

The Tjibaou Cultural Center is one of the major works of Pritzker-Prize winning architect Renzo Piano. It is a cluster of differently sized pavillions that are inspired by the architectural traditions of the Kanak people. From some viewpoints the building blends completely into the surrounding forest. The cultural center itself offers a number of exhibitons describing the art and history... More

The cultural center is an interesting building from an architectural point of view, apart from this there is nothing else to be seen there unless there is an event/exhibition etc. The surrounding park is secred ground and is nice for walk.Outside, there is also a replica of the huts of the indigenous people - you can go around and go... Designed by Renzo Piano as a line of spaces strongly reminiscent of giant Kanak huts, the centre lays along a peninsula dotted with Norfolk pines 10 kms E of Noumea. The buildings and their surroundings are worth the trip - the exhibited items vary.

The extraordinary buildings by architect Renzo Piano are works-of-art in themselves -- they must be seen in person to be truly appreciated. The exhibitions range from ancient petroglyphs to contemporary works, and there is an outdoor area with Kanak tribal houses. The highlight of our visit was the tour which included performance by the dance group We Ce Ca that... More

We recently stopped in Noumea with a cruise ship (Celebrity Solstice) and took a 2 1/2 hour bus tour through the countryside around Noumea. Our first stop was the Tjibaou cultural centre. Impressive to say the least. Our guide went to great lengths to explain the origins of the centre, its architecture, people and future. It was an interesting respite... More
