we visited this amazing place as part of a cruise. A set of 3 tropical islands which could - and should - be a tropical paradise actually became the gates of hell. Each of the 3 islands formed part of a notorious French penal colony. Tourists are confined to the middle island - Ile royale - where the many buildings... More

"Devil's Island", officiallyis one of three islands in the Iles du Salut ("Salvation Islands"), the other two being Ile Royale and Ile Saint-Joseph, but all three comprising the "Bagne de Cayenne" (the French "Penal Colony of Cayenne"). Ile du Diable ("Devil's Island") was used for political prisoners after its establishment by Napoleon III in 1852, and operated for just over... More

This was a port of call on a cruise ship and a most pleasant stop as well. The only island you can visit is Isla Royale Andre actual Devil's Island is off limits so you can only view it from Isle Royale. There is a dock for tenders to access and a most pleasant walk around the island, through the... More

What a very pretty sight we happened upon in the middle of nowhere. We tendered across a short distance to the Island covered in green vegetation , animals & old penal ruins, a church & other buildings at the top of the hill. The walking tracks around the small Island are good. Shaded most of the way with tropical trees... More

This site, made famous by "Papillon", is the best tourist attraction in French Guiana, boasting historical buildings from the infamous penal colony and pleasant walking paths among palm trees. A quaint hotel and restaurant are available.

Devil's island itself is a bit unapproachable but the broader sense of Devil's Island includes the former prison now hotel. The island has some beautiful birds, the world's biggest rodents, and some aggressive monkeys. Very pleasant though a bit warm.

We moored off the island and were taken ashore by dinghies. To get to the main sights involves a walk up a steep hill although there are level walks round the coast. It was nice to visit but it must have been very depressing to have to stay there and not be able to leave.

A long uphill climb to the buildings on the top and you need to take more water than you think unless you are habituated to the equatorial heat, but there is so much to see, wonderful views and wildlife and fascinating buildings in various states of preservation and ruin. Do go around the lower path as well as up to... More

We did not actually go to the island where the prisoners were actually kept until 1953 when It was closed down. The larger of the two island houses historical monuments, a church, bar, gift shop and has measurement apparatus for space launches. The islands have about 50,000 tourists visit them each year. There are animal that inhabit the island that... More
