If you like to go somewhere unique, remote, stark and beautiful, this is the destination. High up in the Andes, this was once the highest operating ski slope in the world, 20 miles from the highest commercial airport in the world, adjacent to the world's highest altitude capitol city in the world. Prone to oxygen sickness? You might want to... More

We booked the tour for 80Bs (not including 15Bs for Chacaltaya and 15Bs for the moon valley) ended up in a mini-van with 12 tourists. There was only one van at the top so I think it doesn't matter with which agency you book (though the prices range from 80-150Bs). The rie to Chacaltaya is a bit bumpy but not... More

If you're not a mountain climber (you're not going to take on Huayna Potosi), Chacaltaya is a sweet option to see what it's like to hike at almost 18,000ft. The views are lovely. The day we went up, some chollitas had climbed to the summit to perform what appeared to be some sort of penitential rite. We maintained some distance... More

We booked this day trip through the travel agent at our hotel and thought it was great. The tour left from the Plaza Isabela Catolica and was well organized all the way through. The high altitude was a hard adjustment so we didn´t walk much. Some of the best views we have seen!

I visited Chacaltaya mountain as part of a day trip booked through Kanoo Tours (which also included a visit to Moon Valley for just $15 USD). It’s located about an hour outside of La Paz city centre & involved a rather bumpy (& at times, rather scary) bus ride to reach the disused ski lodge near the top. From here,... More

The old ski resort has one the most beautiful mountain views I've seen. I have only biked there so I don't know much about transport. The drive from the La Paz is striking as you leave the high density city and enter in an almost empty, rugged, mountainous are. High, dry desert. No matter how you go, dress warmly, bring... More

This is a 90 minutes trip from La Paz with a taxi or car or minibus, on dirt roads, going up to 5.300m! Higher than almost anywhere in the world! Then you can walk up to two summits, one about 5.380m high and the second 5.421m! The walk is easy, takes about 20 minutes, if you don´t have altitude problems...... More

The view from Chacaltaya to Huayna Potosi, Illimani, Titicaca and El Alto are breathtaking (if you have a good wheather). Be careful of coming here because of altitude, you have to be very well adapted. I can't imagine how people could ski in here...

Went here unexpectedly with a mini bus tour. The bus took us to the 'ski lodge' and from there it was a 1km hike straight up to get some stunning views. The wind was terrible and while there was no snow, it was definitely in the negatives. It would have been a great place to stay and ski once upon... More

No snow and no skiing possible unfortunately. However an awsome trip to this mountain 5400 meters high with breathtaking views of the mountains. At this altitude Oxygen level is only 50% so make sure you are well adapted to the altitude. How well you can adapt is very personal and difficult tp predict. The trip can be made by mini... More
