Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

You can only see it from outside, but the whole complex is just beautiful, like from a fairy story, colorful and very big

We went to the palace grounds in the evening. This is possibly the best time to visit the palace grounds - given the weather. There is adequate parking which is available at the site. You are likely to come across a huge number of tourists who come to visit this place daily. Again some beautiful sights to be captured on the camera.

Something to visit if you’re passing by, just because it’s an significant part of your Oman tour. You are not permitted inside, but if you are with a tour guide, he/she will keep you upto speed with the surroundings and everything there is to know about the palace

Rebuilt in 1972 this colourful palace serves as a residence and guesthouse of the sultan. It is located on a large compound in the old city. Surrounded by rather dull looking white and brown government offices, the palace stands out as a rather fanciful structure. It is not a sultan's palace in Disneyland. I wonder how the other 5 residences of the sultan look like.

Interesting landmark easily visited in combination with the National Museum. Popular with strolling families and friends, especially in early evening, and at holidays. It was beautifully decorated with red, white, and green lights when we visited, just before the Nov 18 National Day.

Now, it isn't a super-impressive building but then it's the Sultan's office where he meets foreign dignitaries, so worth a look, especially if you are there to visit the absolutely unmissable National Museum.
The building is relatively unassuming for a palace, in my opinion. And the design and colours made it appear a bit toy-ish. The rest of the buildings in the area are all white and dark brown and the house different ministries of the government, they all look stately and awe-inspiring, whereas the palace looks a little bit whimsical and comical.
Anyhow, there are two ways to approach it. If you have taken a bus and/or are visiting the National Museum, then spin around and spot the palace. It's right there! You can walk up till the large gates that are always shut to visitors, take the quintessential photos and get going in 10 minutes straight.
The second way is to approach through the French Museum or something like that. If you are walking around the area up to the Al Mirani fort, then you will find yourself in the back of the palace grounds. When we approached the area, the guards were not there, or were chill. There were CCTVs around, but no strictness as such. I was able to thrust my phone in through the gate and snap some pictures. I wasn't told off in fear of security violations or anything.
The interesting thing is that the view of the palace is pretty much the same in the back as it is in front, plus you get to see the Al Mirani fort (a Portuguese fort that looks cute, like a gingerbread house and is being restored), you also get to see the ocean access from the palace boundaries. But most interestingly, you get to see a pretty-looking mosque as well.
The palace grounds were vast, with a lot of plants, shrubbery and trees, but I saw more splendour in the Royal Mosque as well as the Opera House in Muscat. Anyway, It's really just a statutory visit, without which the trip feels awkward and incomplete.
Time to view : less than 15 minutes really.

Despite being only looked at from the outside the Al Alam Royal Palace is one of the highlights of Muscate. It is located in a beautiful gardened square, where the National Museum also stands and is flanked by the former Portuguese forts on both sides.

A good stop on our 1/2 day tour with Sunshine Tours Oman. Exterior views only, but the grounds are lovely and a neat view from behind (water side) if you walk around the left side.
Also a great view of the old Portuguese fort from behind. We didn’t take time to go up, though.

When my wife and I arrived at the Al Alam Palace, the Omani flag was raised, which I learned meant that the Sultan was on the grounds of the Al Alam Palace complex. While we were not able to visit the inside of the Palace, the view from the gates are still impressive. Though not currently used as an official residence, this Palace is now used for official functions and to welcome foreign dignitaries and distinguished guests. Adjacent to the Palace is a magnificent white building that is a guest villa with its own pool, spa and manicured gardens that can be used as a temporary residence by those foreign dignitaries and distinguished guests!
