Overview
More
Discovered after the civil war of 75-90 during the demolition of damaged buildings, this large Z-shaped archaeological area in the heart of Downtown Beirut is still under excavation. The ruins of foundation walls, arches and floors uncovered are thought to date from the Roman and Byzantine periods and to belong to structures surrounding the Agora or marketplace. The area extends from the Corinthian columns of the Cardo Maximus, around St George Maronite Cathedral and all the way to Place des Martyrs.

This place is very nice but has no explanations as of its contents, so aside from some nice columns that are still standing it is hard to understand their importance just by visiting. Furthermore, since it can only be seen from the outside, I'd only...More

This site holds lots of potential. The area looks like it holds considerable historical significance but there don't seem to be any interpretive signs to give visitors information on the site. There also does not seem to be a path as most is overgrown with...More

There is no Forgiveness for wasting time in this garden!! Old unorganized ruins with practically nothing interesting to see or do. Not recommended at all.

Located west from the Martyr's Square and within walking distance from Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque, you might have to walk a bit deeper to find out the remnants since it is hard to see if you are distance away from it

Hearing the muezin from the mosque, the church bells ringing, roman columns - it has huge spiritual atmosphere!

The Garden of Forgiveness lies close to Martyrs’ Square.. It is surrounded by places of worship belonging to different denominations, and reveals many layers of Beirut’s past. The area was classified as non aedificandi, not to be built, in the Master Plan of the Beirut...More

This ancient Roman archeological site is yet another reminder of the age of this city and the long history of the country. Great example of Roman city building and it is great to see it being excavated for all to enjoy.

Easy to access as part of a general visit to this area but you can only stand and stare so it is better to read up on them first.
