This is a very important place for people who are especially interested in the fortune of the Holly Mary. The first story was, many hundreds years ago, that she was sleeping forever in a tomb in the Dormition Abbey in Old Jerusalem. Must see.

This is the mother monastery and home of the Abbot of the Benedictine community living in Jerusalem and in Tabgha beside the Sea of Galilee. When guidebooks tell you it is just outside the walls of the Old City, they are not kidding! We almost missed it by looking too far away from the wall near the Zion Gate, but... More

The gift shop is opened from 09:00-5pm. I usually get most of my Religious souvenirs from this shop. I like that you do not have to haggle over prices, you pay the price that is listed on the item. The church is lovely however during the day over packed with visitors. Vespers is in English some evenings at 6:30pm. There... More

The building is relatively new from 1909, built with money of the German Kaiser, and the place gives a sense of respect and emotion, a must place to visit for every catholic visiting Jerusalem Also they have a nice coffee place next to the Abbey.

The Dormition Abbey is a Benedictine community located on mount Zion just beyond the walls of Old Jerusalem. It is located near Zion gate. This is one of the three earliest churches built in Jerusalem. It is a fortress type building with a conical roof and is surrounded by four towers. This is the spot from which the Holy mother... We visited the crypt when the main lights were off and all that could be seen were the hands and face of the Madonna in Dormition. That created a serene atmosphere which was lost as soon as somebody found the main light switch. Hopefully you will be able to turn the lights off and experience the same magical moment.

The Catholic church is built for the Dormition of Mary, according to tradition. There is a sculpture of her sleeping in the crypt with a painted ceiling above.

This is another pilgrimage site to visit. The upper church is very beautiful with colorful mosaics. Below is the Crypt church which includes several side alters adorned with beautiful mosaics and offer many niches to pray and reflect. Center of it all is the Dormition of Mary statue. Around the statue is a prayer rail and above the statue is... More
