    The Third Holiest Islamic site.
The Dome of the Rock is an iconic landmark in Jerusalem. It has an octagonal structure, a blue mosaic facade, and a glittering golden Byzantine dome. The gold inlaid weighs over 80kg. Muslims donated over 100000 gold dinar coins to be melted down. The Al Aqsa Mosque complex is at the south end of the esplanade. The Dome on the Rock was built upon a sacred rock in 692 CE. A rock slab, Abraham nearly sacrificed his son to God. The son was Ishmael and not Issac. In the Islamic scriptures, Muhammad prayed here before his ascension to Heaven with the Archangel Gabriel. In his 'Night Journey, they stopped at Mount Sinai and met Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, before flying back to Mecca. This Muslim shrine was built on sacred Jewish sites and Christian churches. It remains a flashpoint for conflict in the 3 Abrahamic faiths.

    Stunningly beautiful
Stunning place. Glad to see people getting along at this very holy site. About 40 years ago we visited and at that time we (who are not Moslem but respect the religion and its followers) were able to go inside. This is only possible now for members of that religion. Nevertheless it is a beautiful place to visit. Strongly recommended.

    Mosque
Dome of the Rock is a Muslim Mosque. Its one of the 5 mosques inside the AlAqsa compound. In the centre inside the mosque is a hugh Rock and it is " hanging " ie there is no base , under is a small cave which is also used as a praying area. The rock was where the Prophet Mohamad ( peace be upon him ) stood before he was taken by the Angel to meet GOD The roof / dome is made of gold donated by the Saudi King. Entrance to the mosque is guarded by armed Israel soldiers. A must visit by muslim all over the World ( should they have enough funds to travel)

Dome of Rock is a remarkable shrine
The Dome of the Rock is a mosque situated on the Temple Mount. The Dome of the Rock is a remarkable shrine. Although it has many features, the most prominent being the Rock where Muslims believe that Abraham was told to sacrifice his son, Ishmael here. If you want to enter the Dome of the Rock, please make arrangements in advance.

The Dome of the Rock is visible from all over Jerusalem and nearby; we had the opportunity to go up on top of the Temple Mount and view the building and its dome up close, although since we are not Muslim we weren't able to go inside. This building is iconic and atop a place which is sacred to Muslims, Jews, and Christians; I was able to go inside years ago (early 90's) but now it's no longer accessible. It is still worth going to the Temple Mount to see the beautiful building and other sights atop the mount.

The Dome of the Rock is one of Islam's most holy sites. The golden dome is a symbol of Jerusalem. There are many traditions associated with the Dome of the Rock, probably the most significant is the belief that from here the Prophet ascended into heaven on his magical steed Al Baraq to pray with the other prophets on the Night of Power. You can see the imprint of Al Baraq's hoof on the Rock. It's worth noting that Mohammad is a Prophet, he is not divine.. There is nothing preventing Christians from entering the Dome of the Rock.

Magnificent! One of those places I have always wanted to visit. This iconic mosque in the heart of Jerusalem is an amazing site and the atmosphere of the whole area feels electric. So much activity with this incredible centrepiece. After navigating the market streets and alleyways from the old city you come out to the view of the golden dome and ascend a large wide stone staircase and enter under a series of arches. The beautiful gold and blue of the main part of the mosque is jaw dropping. Seeing all the families and individuals congregating around the wide open square adds to the magic. Then look around at the city around you and the mount behind.
