Built on the site of the ancient hippodrome equine race track of old Constantinople...near the Blue Mosque in the Historic district. Similar to the Washington Monument or Paris' Place de la Concorde, but with etchings...good for a pic or two.

The Obelisk of Ill. Tutmosis has its origins in ancient Egypt. The Emperor Theodosius had he obelisk transferred to Constantinople (now Istanbul). It was erected on the Hippodrome, or ancient horse racing track. It's in the Sultan Ahmet district, not far from the Blue Mosque, it's hard to miss if you are in the area. It might make an interesting... More

This magnificent granite obelisk has travelled all the way from Middle Kingdom Egypt via Ancient Rome to stand in its current position in the centre of the former Hippodrome. Dating from 1500 BC, it is a beautiful and impressive obelisk the hieroglyphics of which are still visible after 35 centuries. It is a reminder that Istanbul is not just the... More

The column was dedicated on May 11, 330 AD. This obelisk has seen gale force winds, fire and earthquakes and is still standing. Maybe it can withstand another 1687 years. A must see.

While this obelisk is located right in the center of the old town and most people glance over it, it seems to be a bit underrated. Here are a few reasons why. 1. This is probably the oldest human made artifact on this size in Istanbul. 2. There are a lot of carved stone around but this is made of... More

Obelisk is situated just in front of the one of the biggest attractions in Istanbul, Blue mosque. It is especially nice in the evening.

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
