Colonized for centuries by non-muslim minorities and foreign traders, the district of Beyoglu (pronounced be-yoh-LU and formerly known as Pera), across the Golden Horn Strait from the historic center, has always been the cosmopolitan heart of Istanbul. At the turn of the 20th century, locals...More

Although tourists primarily visit the Old City / Sultanahmet district, it's worth crossing the Galata bridge to Beyoglu to sample the tourist goods, excellent restaurants and cafes, Galata Tower, and a number of lesser known (but very fine) museums. It also features the best local...More

There is construction going on and that has had a negative impact. Crowded as always but without the usual attractive sense of history or style.

You can enjoy the very beautiful Istiklal street full of local culture in Istanbul. There is a park you can sit and have picnic, walk around and just have relaxing time while shopping in this huge street.

Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal
Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night
and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights,
shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of
people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive
Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of
the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned
restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening
