The Sultan Ahmet District has featured in many creations, including Graham Greene's Stambould Train, one his earlist -- and best -- novels. The Sultan Ahmet Mosque, one of Islam's most spectacular places of worship, is usually called the Blue Mosque, from its tiles. The area also features the Hoppodrome, a horse racing track that dates from the Byzantine era. Another... More

This is by far the most historically rich area of Istanbul. I like it during April when walking for long hours is joyful and interesting. It is filled with amusement and fun. Perfect for shopping (particularly Mahmut Pasa street) and food lovers.

We stayed in Fatih and there was nothing better than see the daily life at this historic part of Istanbul, specially visiting all the sites at night and be very close to the Grand Bazar. Take some time to ppl watch and see the daily life, its so incredible how different we are.

If you are visiting Istanbul for the first time stay here! Walking distance to all of the historical landmarks and museums, streets are not too crowded, and cars are only allowed on a selection of the roads in this area. Very quiet and safe area.

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
