Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

Istanbul is one of the greatest cities in the world, there is so much I can say about it but you should experience it all for yourself. A city of two halves and plenty to offer ... The Blue mosque being one of the must sees, it is remarkable inside and the detail and the enormity of it - truly... More

This is worth a visit to see the interior of a mosque that attempts to recreate the glorious Byzantine era in an Islamic style.

We visited this old and beautiful mosque in February 2017. It was a cold and rainy day and this mosque was a nice shelter for us to wait out the downpour. So we had enough time to see the inside of the mosque. The painted tiles and the inside of the domes are really gorgeous. I had seen very beautiful... More

I was looking forward to visiting the mosque from the moment I arrived. The architecture is amazing and it's a must if you visit Istanbul. I was a bit disappointed inside though, but might be because I had the Hassan II mosque in Casablanca as reference, which is much bigger and has more things to see inside. Still, I was... More

This beautiful mosque has Soo much to offer from lovely architecture, beautiful history, and lovely local culture. I love how they preserve the etiquettes of a mosque by ensuring all cover their legs and woman cover their hair.

Absolutely magnificent. From the moment you set sight on this huge monument to walking in the courtyard, to the stunning internal size and decor. An absolute must see if in Istanbul Just beware of the timing as this is a functioning mosque, so is closed during prayer times, usually lasting no longer than an hour.

Wow, what a beautiful mosque. The tiles and colours were breathtaking. Huge place and defiantly awe inspiring and so much history. Had jeans on and although I'd taken a scarf to cover my head, I was given a skirt to put over my jeans. What a site, but made for a good photo though and we should all respects such... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
