When it comes to exploring a city’s authentic dining scene, while the stomach should ideally serve as the best compass, the truth of the matter is that it’s hard to find your way without good local advice. That’s where Culinary Backstreets’ Culinary Walks come in. In order to help you explore the world’s gastro-capitals and get off these cities’ eaten path, CB is offering (with selected partners) guided culinary walks in some of the cities we cover, starting with Istanbul, Athens, Barcelona, and Shanghai. Our culinary walks are designed to lead visitors on an eating binge through a city’s lesser-seen historic side streets and authentic markets, taking in countless hard-to-find culinary gems and, in between bites, a select number of untouristed monuments.

We were in Istanbul for four days in which the weather wasn't great. The day of our two-continent tour with Culinary Backstreets was the worst! Rainy, windy and cold. And yet, thanks to the warmth of Gonca, is was our best day. Gonca took us for a unique breakfast and a tour of a deli-type store on the European side... More

I was so fortunate to be introduced to Culinary Backstreets by a very knowledgeable foodie friend. The tour I took (Culinary Backstreets of the Bazaar Quarter) was brilliant and fascinating thanks to our wonderful guide Gonca. She was warm, knowledgeable and enthusiastic despite a cool and rainy day. Her tour brought me to alleyways and into ancient buildings I would... More

What a fantastic find! Well organised, friendly, off the beaten track and super interesting! I loved every bit of the tour. The guide, Ugur was fantastic too - the warmest, kindest and most knowledgeable host :) I would have never tried the foods he chose, nor gone to the places he took us to. It felt like being shown around... More

Brilliant tour, huge variety of things to eat and see in places you may not have travelled to on your own. We made 14 stops ! You may not enjoy all of them but they are all worth trying! Ugur (Our guide) was very friendly, knowledgable and welcoming. I have done a few tours over the years and this was... More

I don't often write reviews on Trip Advisor but we enjoyed the day we spent with Benoit wandering around this beautiful city so much, I felt I had to let everyone know just how great the tours and Istanbul are. We did the '2 continents' tour on our first day in the city and the whole thing was so clear... More

We booked the backstreet bazaar food tour on the first day so it was basically the first thing we did! I think it was a great way to find out more about the city from a really knowlegable local guide and fellow foodie Esin who was amazing! She met us at 9.30 am and then proceeded to feed us until... We were about 40 minutes late because Turkey no longer changes their time forward or back by an hour. We thought we had plenty of time because our phones automatically update based on location. Benoit called us and luckily we were the only ones on the tour. He was so nice despite the fact that we were unbelievably late. The... More

We did the 2 continents tour with Gonca and have to say we were beyond impressed. Everything from the Pre-trip communication to the itinerary of the tour and the variety of food was outstanding. We had some of the best food we've ever had. On top of it all Gonca was warm and friendly. I felt like family by the... More

Just finished the "Two Markets, Two Continents" tour with Remziye. She is delightful, charming and full of knowledge. My friend and I had a wonderful day of walking and eating the hidden gems of glorious Istanbul. Take this tour at the beginning of your stay, as you might want to revisit a restaurant later in the week. The food was... More

Staying in Grand Bazaar

Neighbourhood Profile
Grand Bazaar
Tourists, hawkers, and locals come together at the Grand Bazaar to comb its labyrinthine passageways in search of a bargain – be it a pair of brand name jeans, a handcrafted silk rug, or a perfectly brewed cup of tea. Outside the vast bazaar, worn, narrow streets wind their way down from its lofty perch to the southern shore of the Golden Horn, where the evocatively aromatic Spice Bazaar beckons alongside the elegant New Mosque (opened in 1665). Nearby, the famed Galata Bridge offers pedestrian access to urban delights across the river in Istanbul’s more residential and contemporary neighbourhoods, while the must-see sights of Sultanahmet are but a leisurely stroll away.
