Istanbul is alive with history mingling with present day in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Most of the must see sites are all within an easy walk of each other. The walk between each site lets you experience Istanbul with the locals, stop for coffee , talk and laugh with the locals, relax in the safeness of Istanbul.

Coming this to this part of Istanbul is a big treat for me. I hook up with an old friend and walk the bazaar and have some lunch and do some people watching. It doesn't really get much better than this. Sad thing is that very few tourists are in town and that really hurt the merchants. Maybe this is... More

A lot of beautiful Ottoman history in Istanbul. Area is pretty secure, especially if you are located in Sultanahmet... Major attractions like Blue Mosque, Sophia Mosque, Topkapi Palace and Basilica Cistern are really pretty close and easily accesible on foot!. Sultanahmet square offer bars, restaurants, stores with great views to major attractions!.

Well, what can I say that hasn't been said? It is indeed historic and it certainly is an area. I walked the streets for hours and found it historic. But, yes, it's just another area. I say get out of town and see Cappadocia.

Thank Doug H

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
