As previously noted Ashgabat is full of modern looking but way OTT monuments, however Unabhangigkeitsdenkmal, or Independence Park, whilst also being grandiose is actually well done with all the fountains, the parkland and especially the large statues of famous Turkmen historical figures. If you see only one of Ashgabat's many monuments make sure it is this one. The locals obviously... More

Independence Park hosts the monument celebrating 8 years of independence. There is another celebrating five years. I enjoyed walking around it and looking at all the statues. You also get a good view of the national library across the road. Just as we finished the circuit there was a changing of the guard and we witnessed goose stepping at its... More

I spend a whole afternoon here, just walking around and enjoying the modern Ashgabat which in my idea you can see in this beautiful park. I was really impressed with the giant statues!

As with most things in Ashgabat, this place is utterly deserted, as someone else commented, it feels like a movie set. For a ten minute wander (any longer and you would spontaneously combust in the heat) it is interesting and the statues and monuments are quite impressive.

Ashgabat is like a Hollywood movie set - absolutely perfect and spotlessly clean, Beautiful statues and fountains abound in green sparks with many fountains. Any drive is beautiful and there are very few people around to detract from the admiration.

I really liked the statues, there is so much detail on the statues and they are massive. You need to tour this monument with a guide to explain everything because there sin't any info there in english

You can never have enough massive white marble monuments in a city like Ashgabat. This is one of them, where larger-than-life statues of great khans greet you as you approach.
