The museum is located in a huge, and I mean HUGE white colonial building that was the residence of the British government. It must cost a fortune to upkeep it and consequently it is in disrepair undergoing 'some' restorations. The collections are so-so, with old Buddhist stone carvings and also Portuguese, Dutch and British most interesting and best preserved. There... More

It is a small place with a small collection spread across 2 or 3 rooms. Not too many artefacts, would need about 20 mins to cover the entire museum.

There are some really interesting artefacts here but it's all so poorly presented. The building in which it sits is very grand but is in such a bad way: bird droppings and random marks stain many of the outside walls. Similarly with the grounds, which are potentially quite stately but have unfinished materials lying around everywhere. Inside, the statues exhibition... More

We have kids aged 8 and 9 and had to kill some time in Colombo so this was ok. We had been to Polunnaruwa so I could explain to the kids these were artifacts found at this site, the throne is cool to see. It costs about 600 per adult, half four kids and you pay a camera permit. Alot... More

We visited the museum on the final day of our 14 days in Sri Lanka. It was lovely, relaxing way to end a great holiday. we were tired, and maybe a bit heat exhausted so the quiet charm of an old colonial building filled with pictures and artifacts from the various historic sites we had been visited was just what... Nice museum with the history of Sri Lanka. Just needs work in terms of better directions for tourists to get to the entrance of the actual museum. Can see there is construction going on, which will be good for the future.
